WHERE I WORK, WHAT I DO

Longhorns

I work in the Beauford T. Jester Center on the University of Texas at Austin campus. This building complex is home for approximately 3000 students, and has 3 dining facilities and several classrooms as well as academic offices and other facilities. I work as the Webmaster and Procurement (Purchasing) Officer for one of the departments. My department assists students who are having problems with learning, studying or just plain getting along while on a college campus. They train and provide tutors in many of the courses taught on campus, and have many self-help resources available for students. In addition, they have many other areas of expertise which they make available to any students that visit.

I handle most problems related to computers & related equipment as well as all other office-related equipment problems of any kind in my department. I assist in placing purchases for all equipment (computer and otherwise), arrange leases of equipment, maintain the inventory roster for the department - keeping track of the movement of all equipment assigned to us; and am the department's main contact with all other departments on campus related to computer network operations and all other problems relating to equipment or environment.

I maintain all of the office equipment, keeping everything running smoothly. For items that I can't fix myself, I place work orders for maintenance and repairs of items such as telephones, voicemail, heating and air conditioning, copy and fax machines, etc., as well as computers and network problems.

Sounds like a lot of work, you say? It has been a tremendous workload at times. However, there are very few computer-related problems that have been unable to be solved, on either PC or Mac equipment (we have a shared network, connecting through Ethernet equipment to the main campus administrative network (as well as interacting with each other) and the World Wide Web through T1 connections. This has enabled staff members to perform their jobs with a minimum of disruption, and allowed things to keep running much more smoothly than they had in the past for the students we serve.

Well, this is the end of the tour for now. Although I've put in a link to information about my home town, it actually takes you to a different site. I hope you've enjoyed your visit and that I've been able to keep things interesting for you.

Please Email Me! I like to hear what others think of what I've done with this, both good and bad. Thanks for stopping in, and come by again soon.
