Season ends with loss to West Craven Hillside went toe to toe with West Craven, the East 3-A No. 1 seed, and found itself tied 7-7 at halftime on a night not fit for man or beast. But the entire second half belonged to the Eagles as West Craven advanced to the third round to play Goldsboro, beating Hillside 34-14. (more) ![]() 11/16/02 Hornets escape in first-round scare It took Hillside nine years to make it back to the state football playoffs, and on Friday night, it took a group of seniors to keep the Hornets in there. Marquize Martin and Jason Mitchell each rushed for touchdowns in the fourth quarter, and Monte Allen and Keith Webster led the defense as Hillside rallied from an eight-point deficit to beat Pikeville Aycock 21-14 in the first round of the state 3-A playoffs. (more) ![]() 11/8/02 Hillside gives seniors night to remember Hillside made up for a slow start with a 27-point explosion in the second quarter Friday night to rout Bartlett Yancey 46-14 for its fourth straight win. (more) ![]() 10/12/02 Hillside Comeback Falls Short The Southern Durham Spartans came into Hillside as the unlikely underdog in their matchup with the Hornets, but showed everyone that they were the real deal early in the game. With the opening kickoff the Spartans forced a fumble and returned it for their first TD of the game, but they weren't finished. Later in the half, Hillside QB, Jason Mitchell threw a costly interception that led to another Southern touchdown. The Hornets were held scoreless until the second half when they put three comeback touchdowns on the board, but a failed two-point coversion proved to be the difference in the Hornets close loss to the Spartans, 20-18. (more) ![]() 10/5/02 Hornets Dominate Orange The Hillside Hornets are proving they deserve more respect when Durham-area people talk about the better prep football teams. Second-year coach Robert Massey has the Hornets — who dominated Orange 32-7 Friday night — making a local impact. (more) ![]() 9/28/02 Southern Alamance, Clegg Run All Over Hornets Three plays into their Five County 3-A conference opener, Hillside had first and goal from the Southern Alamance seven yard line. Three hours later, they had to be wondering, "What happened?" (more) ![]() 8/24/02 Hillside Stuns Northern Durham! Never. Never had Northern visited the campus of Hillside High School for a football game (new or old school) and the Hornets made sure they would never want to come back. The Hornets, who lost 67-0 in last year's matchup ended up on the opposite end of the score Friday night with a 41-14 plastering of the Knights. The last time Northern lost by this many points in a regular-season game was a 51-0 loss to Durham High in 1965. The Hornets took a 20-0 halftime lead and after giving up 14 points in the third quarter they responded with 21 more in the fourth. Jason Mitchell led Hillside, completing 8-of-18 passing for 169 yards and five touchdown passes, while teammate Marquize Martin added two touchdown catches. (more) ![]() 8/24/02 Hornets Drop Opener To Tigers With plenty of newcomers playing for both teams, Chapel Hill proved tougher than Hillside on Friday night. Charlie Nieves, Brian Smith and Demarcus Roberson each scored a touchdown to help power the Tigers 20-7 in sultry temperatures at Blunt Stadium. (more) |
