Describing Nathan's family has been difficult because he was married several times. He seems to have had children by each wife.
Dru says very little about Nathan other than his marriages and descendants. He shows three marriages and 7 children.
Marriage: ``Miss Eddy'' - children: Jack, Nancy, Will, Joe, John. (Johnny Bezusko, who descends from the first marriage, identifies her as Rachel Dennis, daughter of John Dennis and ? Bybee.
Marriage: ``Sally Alsup'' - child: Jim.
Marriage: ``Syrene Spears'' - child: Albert.
1850: Nathan is enumerated in Hickory County, Missouri, Dist. 37. His age is given as 36 ( c1814) and his place of birth is given as Georgia. His wife's name is Rachel, age 24 (b1826), born TN. His property is shown as $1,000. Children are Joseph, 14 (1836), Charles E., 10 (1840), William C. and Andrew J., both 7 (they were twins) (1843), Nancy A., 5 (1845), John M., 4, 1846, and Nathan, 8/12 (1850).
1860: Hickory County, Mo., T37 R20. Hill is enumerated in dwelling 129, and Nathan is in number 131. (Source: a transcription, but I don't know by whom.) Nathan Pippin, age 46 (c1814), born in TN. Occupation: Farmer. Real property of $3,500 - personal property not shown. This would suggest he had twice the holdings of Charles Applewhite Pippin. Wife ``Sarah''? (in the remarks area the transcriber wrote ``Sally Alsup'') age 45 (c1815), born in TN. Children Nancy A., 16 (c1844); John, 13 (c1847); Nathan, 9 (c1851); Rachel 7 (c1853); and James 4 (c1856).
1870: Nathan is enumerated in Lincoln Township, Dallas Co., Missouri. He is shown as age 56 (1814), born Georgia. His wife is shown as Sarah, age 54 (1816), born TN. His real property was $6,000 and personal property $865. Two children are shown living in the household: John M., 22 (1848), and James, 13 (1857).
1880: Nathan is shown in Piney Township, Pulaski County, Missouri. He is said to be 60-something years old (I can't read the age clearly). The age could be 66, which would fit our understanding of Nathan's DOB in 1814. He says his birthplace was Georgia, His father and mother are both shown as having been born in SC. His wife is shown as Sirena, age 40, born TN. Children living in the household are Rosa A.,16 (c1864), William E., and Albert, all born MO.
I have seen no records of any Civil War service by Nathan.
A Warning Note: In a letter to Johnny Bezusko (April 22, 1969), Pearl Baker says that the 1805 Land Lottery Lists have Nathan living in Hancock Co. (GA). I've heard this one about Nathan and the Georgia Land Lottery before. He wasn't even born in 1805. Beware!
An interesting story was recorded in History and Tragedies of Hickory County, page 35:
Nathan Pippin lived in the old Coborn Bennett place southeast of Preston. Tom Morgan's father was at a dance at the Pippins. Trouble arose on the outside and a man was shot. He slipped into the house and upstairs without being detected. The blood dripped through the upstairs floor onto the dance floor. He lay there until he bled to death. No name was available for this man. This occurred during war times. This incident was related by Tom Morgan.
Nathan is buried in the Fisher graveyard, Preston, Mo. When I went in 1994 I was unable to locate the monument, but Johnny Bezusko had a photograph of it. His name is written in a semi-circular pattern at the top of the stone; at the very top are clasped hands carved in stone. Looking at the stone you can see one labeled ``Marary'' behind it.
