Louisa Matilda Jane (Pippin) Eidson

She was born in 1831 in Tennessee. The 1870 census provides the basis for a sketch of her life. Her oldest child, Lucy, was 14 in 1870, from which we can infer that she married around 1855. Her second child, William J., was 12 in 1870 and born in Missouri (around 1858); her third child, Louiza A., was 10 in 1870 and born in Texas (around 1860). Samuel, 2 in 1870 (b. 1868) was born in Texas, as were all the rest until their last child, Mahala F., born Dec. 1869 in Missouri. So she married in Missouri around 1855, moved to Texas around 1860, and moved back to Missouri around 1869.

Her husband, Samuel B. Eidson or Idson, is said to be 49 in 1870, therefore born around 1821. The 1870 census states that he was born in Tennessee; however, in the 1880 census, by which time Samuel has died, the lines for his children show that their father was born in Va.

In the 1870 census their household includes Nancy Pippin, age 81 (born about 1789) from North Carolina. So Matilda seems to have provided a home for her mother after Hill Pippin died.

In 1870 and 1880 both, Matilda is shown in Russell Township, Camden County, Missouri. In 1908 a letter was written to her showing an address of Buffalo, Missouri. Matilda would have been 76 at the time. I have not found her in a census after 1880.

Per Dru L. Pippin

``Matilda Pippin married Sam Eidson'' - but at a later date he scribbled ``Louisa'' near the front of her name, and seemed to be inserting a ``Jane'' as a possible middle name. Under her name he wrote ``born Apr 2, 1831''.

Then he recites the descendants:

``Lucy married Bill McCain (2 girls, 1 son Andrew) Alice married Bill Osborne (2 children) Bill married Jane Green (live in Idaho) Caroline married Boone Parmer (1 daughter) Fannie married - Elvira married Ike Griffith (3 daughters) Richard married Julia Hurst (1 son Emmett) Sam married Bel e Campbell''

The Letter to Matilda

The following letter was transcribed by Mrs. Johnnie Bezusko. It is a copy of a letter to a daughter of Hill Pippin by the husband of Hill's granddaughter, Virginia (``Jennie''), a daughter of William Carroll Pippin.

Gainesville, Texas July 31, 1908 Mrs. Louisa Matilda Eidson Buffalo, Mo

Dear Madam:

I acknowledge the receipt of your letter a few days ago, replying will say several years ago, some one of the Pippin family of Nath Pippin's children, stated to me or Jennie (my wife) that your father, her grandfather (Hilly Pippin) had a large estate coming from the Hill's side of the house and stated that you knew all about it or could get some information. At that time I tried to locate you and have never heard a word from you until this letter; therefore what information I had apparently conveyed to me, that you had the desired information to get your father's estate. Thereby your letter conveys to me that you had no information to impart, that you got a starting point, etc. I am now of the opinion that if your father had the estate it is now too late to try to get it, as limitation is run against the heirs, therefore I conclude there is no use in bothering with the matter any further.

My wife says that she remembers you and that you are her father's youngest sister, of course I know nothing of you except what she tells me. She says tell you that she has five children. Her oldest boy George is now in Havana, Cuba translating the English Language into Spanish, works for the government. Her oldest daughter Orah is married to a man by the name of French, a lawyer lives at Daingerfield, Texas. The second daughter Annie married a man by the name of Nelson, a merchant, lives at Mineral Wells, Texas. Her fourth child Emery lives at Gainesville and is a U. S. Postmaster. Lillian her baby daughter lives at home with us. She says tell you that your brother George has a farm in Missouri. His postoffice is Richmond [sic], Mo. Jasper Pippin is in California some where. Joda, we don't know where he is. Charles is in Cooke County, a farmer. Bland is a doctor in St. Louis, Mo. Alice lives in Texas, husband Tom Steed, he has four children, family lives at Gainsville. Sophia or Niah married Robert Nelson, and Lizzie her baby sister married Tom Wilson; their postoffice is Waynesville, Mo.
