Supporting Characters

Shoeshine Boy

Underdog’s alter ego. Meek and mild, no one suspects that Shoeshine Boy is Underdog, perhaps only because he doesn’t speak in rhyme as Underdog always does. Of course no one ever suspected that Clarke Kent was Superman.

Each show began with:

Narrator: "One of the city’s most humble and lovable characters was Shoeshine Boy"
Shoeshine Boy: "All finished, sir."
Customer: "Thanks, Shoeshine Boy. You’re humble and lovable."
Shoeshine Boy: "Bless you, sir."
(But not terribly trusting. Shoeshine Boy bites the coin to see if it is a fake.)
Narrator: "Little did anyone know, that when ever there was a cry for help…"
Woman’s Voice: "Help! Help, help!"
Narrator: "Shoeshine Boy became in real life…Underdog!"
Destroying the phone booth in the process.

Shoe shines are "still only 5 cents" in March of the Monsters.

Sweet Polly Purebread

"Where, oh where has my Underdog gone?
Oh where, oh where can he be?"

A television news reporter. Her station is WTTV, channel 5. TTV is a semi-inside reference to Total Television, the production company for the Underdog show. Sweet Polly is an obvious spoof of Lois Lane who needs to be saved from one villain after another.

Polly's boss is O.J. Skweez, owner and president of station WTTV. The sports editor is Al Melon.
