Chapter 9 ended describing G-d’s blessing Israel during Messiah’s 1000 year reign. Chapter 10 continues with a description of the Messiah’s millennial reign.
Zechariah 10:1 Ask the L-RD rain in the time of the latter rain; so the L-RD shall make bright clouds, and give them showers of rain, to every one grass in the field.
Zechariah encourages the people to request these blessings with confidence from the L-rd as He alone can provide them.
latter rain - this is a twofold meaning. The latter (later) rains come in the springtime in Israel. This is referring to literal rain during the Messianic Age. G-d will shower the land with physical rain. See Isaiah chapter 35.
Hosea 6:1-3 Come, let us return to the L-RD: for He has torn, and He will heal us; He has smitten, and He will bind us up. After two days will He revive us: in the third day He will raise us up, and we shall live in His sight. Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the L-RD: His going forth is prepared as the morning; and He shall come to us as the rain, as the latter and former rain to the earth.
This passage describes L-rd Messiah blessing upon us as rain. Notice the time of His coming. The nation of Israel was revived after 2 days (2,000 years in 1948); we are now in the 3rd day (the new millennium). Hosea states that we will live in His site on the 3rd day. :~)
Zechariah 10:2 For the idols have spoken deceit, and the diviners have seen a lie, and have told false dreams; they comfort in vain: therefore they went their way as a flock, they were troubled, because there was no shepherd.
The call to prayer in the first verse is contrasted with idol worshippers in the second verse.
While the true and living G-d showers us with physical and spiritual blessings, the leaders of the idol worshippers are leading their flock to Gehenna (the Lake of Fire).
the idols - In Hebrew Teraphim (family idol)
Zechariah 10:3 My anger was kindled against the shepherds, and I punished the goatherds: for the L-RD of hosts will visit His flock the house of Judah, and will make them as His goodly horse in the battle.
G-d will judge the false “shepherds”, the “goatherds”, for their false leadership. They are wolves in sheep’s clothing.
Matthew 7:15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
the house of Judah - the Messiah will come from the house of Judah
His goodly horse - “royal” horse, when strengthened by G-d, Israel will become an invincible royal warhorse
It is implied that this will happen again in the future. See Matt 24:5, 11, 22-28; 2 Thess.1:8-12)
