對於要比賽的職業拳手或業餘拳手來說,能否真的上擂台,首先,要看看能否成功減磅。減磅有以下的方法:

按摩(Massage)
按摩其實是運動的一種形式,它可以運動一些不容易活動的肌肉,這有助促進血腋的循環,將血帶到皮膚的表面和幫助出汗。按摩還可以消解肪脂、改善神經及循環系統,讓拳手在運動完後得到鬆馳。

出汗(Sweating)
運動會導到體溫上升,因為恆溫的原故,身體便會排出汗水。為了更有效的排汗,拳手們會穿上膠衣。膠衣有密封的特質,它可以更有效地提高溫度及排出更多的汗水。但要緊記穿膠衣出汗要適可而止,不能太強逼自已,以致身體不適。穿膠衣運動適宜於跑步,跳繩或影擊運動等等。

減少液體的流進(Cutting down on fluid intake)
若出了5磅的汗,但又飲回5磅的水,這又怎能減磅?所以要節制水份的吸收。在運動完後,不能即時飲水,要等身體回復常態後,才能吸收水份。若在這期間,真的太辛苦,濕口是可以的。在平日要禁止一切不必要的水份,更加不能飲碳性飲料,這會令體重升得更快。吸進的水份以抵消口喝為恰。

食物控制 (Controlling food intake)
澱粉質和脂肪食物盡可能不食,取而代之的可以食一些肉類、奶、新鮮水果及蔬菜等等。

 
A sample weight control diet might as follow:
Breakfast Two or three eggs; fried or preferably,grilled beef;one piece the size of the palm of the hand;fresh vegetables like lettuce and tomatoes; 2-3 pieces of bread; one cup of milk, hot or cold.
Lunch Fruit,bananas,for example. Eat no fewer than two and no more than four. Or one piece of papaya. One slice of bread. Lunch should not be too heavy. A boxer should train himself to finish eating at least three hours before a training session.
Supper No severe restrictions are placed on this meal. Heavier foods can be eaten as desired, but not to excess, and sweets containing sugar should be avoided.

A WARNING:
When reducing, a boxer should take precautions against certain special dangers that weight loss can entail. He should always keep a sharp lookout for any unusual occurrence in the way his body functions. Weight loss should never exceed a pound a week, as anything beyond this can have a damaging effect on the body. These problems may not present themselves until many years later.

禁水(Dehydration)
在過磅前的一天,拳手們是會禁水,意思是不沾進任何水份。以求在過磅的一刻,可以達到體重的要求。若在這24小時不沾進水份,體重會減1磅多,所以在過磅的前一天,要"看磅做人",在比賽的前一天,不會再作任何練習運動,只會做一些輕鬆的柔軟動作,鬆馳神經。

後記:
減磅不宜在短期內進行,應有計劃地,有節奏的一步步的減下去,幅度不宜太大,要適可而止,因每人天生體重都有一個底線,若超過這個底線,對身心都會造成影響。
