Bench Power Helps Lai Q Knock Off New Youth, 3-1

The Lai Q Volleyball team defected New Youth (22-25, 25-16, 25-10, and 25-22) Sunday in the Mei Lam Sports Center. The Lai Q improved to .500 on the Div.A2 tournament (2-2) while New Youth falls to 0-4.
"We showed a lot of resolve tonight," Head Coach Wong Sai Fung said. "We were trailing 21-19 in the fourth set and came back to win. I thought Szeto Po Ying and Lai Wing Yin controlled the match tonight and played great. Our bench contributed and this was a great team win."


Opposite hitter Ma Yin Shan led the Lai Q with a double-double, recording 11 kills (.333 attack percentage) and 11 digs. Outside hitter Cheung Mei Yu was close behind with also 11 kills while setter Tang Ngo Lam tailed 40 assists.


The New Youth won a close, hard-fought first set by 25-22 score. Lai Q only recorded .205 attack percentages this set.


Lai Q never tailed in the set two en route to a 25-16 win. Szeto Po Ying came strong off the bench and led the way with six kills while the other bench player Lai Wing Yin added three.


Set three was under controlled by Lai Q. Kong Kwan Ting and Cheung Mei Yu both added 4 kills for Lai Q.
Lai Q hit at a .519 clip with 3 team errors en route to a 25-10 win in the third set. Kong Kwan Ting led the way with four kills and a .800 attack percentage while three other Lai Qs had a block assists.


Lai Q built an 8-3 lead before a New Youth timeout. The Lai Q then railed off a solid 14-5 run for a 22-8 advantage and New Youth burned its last timeout of the set. Backup opposite substituted Ma Yim Shan and provided an assist for a kill by Cheung Mei Yu. And then a Tang Ngo Lam serve ace capped a 2-0 spurt for a 23-8 advantage. Lai Q kept its lead throughout the set to go up to 2-1 in the match.


Lai Q wrapped up the match with a 25-22 win in the fourth set. Back-to-back kills by two teams in the stanza gave New Youth a 21-19 lead. New Youth kept between a one to two point lead until a 3-1 Lai Q surge tied the set at 22. An attack error by a New Youth player gave Lai Q a late game lead with 23-22. New Youth head coach call a timeout. After the break, Wong Oi Ying came in the game for the substitution of Setter Tang Ngo Lam. She hit two important kills consecutively that gave Lai Q its second win of the Div.A2 tournament.


"Seems we haven¡¦t got a win for a long time," Wong Sai Fung said. "We played aggressive and our players were really hot tonight. We have a two-week holiday, but we need to use the momentum from this match against Vigor."


Lai Q will conclude action at the Tsuen Wan West Sports Center to play against Vigor on 28-Jun (Sunday) at 10:30 a.m.
