Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) was born in a Viennese family. He was the oldest of seven children. When he was 4 years old, his family suffered financial setbacks and was forced to live in a crowded apartment. He remained a resident of Vienna until he emigrated to England in 1938, the year before he died.

Freud had many interests. However, since he was Jewish, his career choices were restricted. He finally entered the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Vienna in 1873.
