1. Drop and Turn
In the beginning it's just you and the wave. The pull of gravity as you kick yourself into the drop down the face. You feel the the board break free as you pull yourself onto the ride. Plant your hips squarely on the boards tail end and feel the rush of speed as you accelerate down the face. Half way down, as the lip starts to form up above, its time to turn or end up riding the whitewater in. Shift your weight over the inside turning rail on both your elbows and hips and slide your outside hand down the rail. Apply increasing pressure as you lean in and carve a bottom turn. Feel the board flex and release as you arc a slice across the wave face and enter the pocket. Adjust your line on the face to maintain speed as the curtain draws close and you become Toobed.
2. Spin
This is the first of the higher performance moves since it opens up the possibilities for future permutations. The spin is an exercise in rail control and balance on your Toobs bodyboard. Key is carrying your speed and pulling yourself onto the board cleanly. Start your turn then as you pull yourself up on the board lift your legs. Lead with your head and feel the spin start. You need to keep the board as flat as possible to the ocean's surface to keep spinning. Be careful not to sink a rail or else your spin will stop and you'll be ejected off your ride. Once you wire the spin you can try multiples and even spin as you approach a breaking section for more radical redirections off the face or the lip. The spin begins your path of performance wave riding variations.
3. Off The Lip
Once you are confident in maintaining speed off your bottom turn, the next thrill is riding to the top and smacking the lip of the breaking wave. This move is very effective on the close out portion of your wave ride. The key is timing the wave and maintaining velocity to ride up the pitching wave and hit the lip without stalling. Stalling near the top can result in a rather crushing slam down the face as the breaking wave will throw you down hard into the impact zone. Keep speed up by carving a shallower bottom turn and keep your rail carving up the face. Once the peak is reached, in a timely fashion, the lip will throw as your board just breaks free of the water causing an invigorating redirection back down the face. It is KEY to avoid a centerpunch landing on your elbows to prevent creasing of the bottom skin. Try landing on the rail to both maintain position on the wave and to prolong the life of your Toobs bodyboard. If you can't maintain control on the decent, bail to save both your hide and ride!
4.Invert Air
Here is a hot move thats of moderate difficulty. This move is a board creaser if not pulled right. Pay attention!
Speed is the critical element to go big. The line-up is again very important so you can get maximum air and extension. This move needs a lip to hit. Best performed on a closing section with some juice. Carry as much speed as possible by adjusting your bottom turn. In this case its a shallow carve to preserve speed. As you hit the lip let the energy throw you backwards as you extend your arms and arch your back. Ahhh.. projectile rush... enjoy! But wait, its becoming critical to get your act together for the touchdown. Bring the board back under as you rotate back into a clean landing position
Here comes the water and the point where you either trash your board or pull da perfect landing and saving your ride for another day. When landing any air its critical to make sure you don't land flat and on your elbows. Here the landing is good since the force is on the rail and well dissipated. Remember flat landings will crease any board. Make your ride last by landing without center punching your board with your elbows. Other good landings include tail or nose first.
5. Rollo
Here's a move for all that like to hit the lip. Watch this sequence and learn from the best. Speed again is key to get the most out of your rollo. Hit the lip at max speed to get good projection. Having the lip throw you back into the wave is why this move works so well as a piece of your ride sequence. Hitting the lip let the energy throw you backwards as you rotate a full 360 and take the drop. Here again the key is to land on your rail to maintain position on the wave face and spare your board from creasing. The better you land the more speed you carry into your next trick.
6. ARS
ARS is adding a spin to your rollo and best done in larger surf with some power so the wave can throw you clear enough to get the hang time needed to pull this move. The rollo move needs to be wired before setting out to perfect the ARS. Key features are carrying your speed and hitting a pitching lip to get some projection away from the wave face. Your spin techniques now come into play as you hit your jumps apex you need again to lead with your head and initiate the spin. Being up in the air you also use your board and by moving it along the axis of rotation you will find yourself starting to spin in the air. Naturally gravity is tugging so if you land not fully spun 360 degrees make sure your light on the rails so you can finish your spin on the wave like this rider. Once you wire this move the spin can be completed in the air for a truly spectacular trick!
7. Drop Knee off the lip
The move seems simple but there is subtle tricks applied to pull this floater. Lets start with the set-up. Best executed riding into a breaking peak. By looking ahead at the peaking wave a bottom turn can be set for maximum speed. Carve a bottom turn and carry all your speed up the waveface. In this case helped along by grabbing the rail to carve a more radical line. Notice the bending at the waist to force more downward pressure on the rail resulting in a fast change of direction without loosing much speed. Timing is critical as one relaxes and extends into the apex of the turn directly into the lip. Time warps, as the lip both redirects and launches you fully extending into a nice floater. Try it when the surf drops, it will make those two foot days phat.
8. Drop Knee Floater 360
Once you got your DK Spin working try this variation to loosen the ear wax. Adding a floater to the DK Spin is more timing than anything. But we all know that time is relative riding close to the wave's toobing event horizon. Just relax and watch this sequence's space warping rhythum. Carve into a lip bend at the waist to absorb g's and watch the world 360 on a floating re-entry. Too much energy being redirected to fully examine all subleties of this move. Suffice to say that if YOU can get these wired you'll never get tired. Being a part of the ocean's kinetic cycles. Enjoy the exotic dance with a wave to push you along. As you ride the timeless rhythum.
9.Stand-up
The move is not something you learn, its more something you react to. This stand-up action is Wonton's slash on a nice open face. The reason we are posting this move is to show the performance that can be attained from a bodyboard in the hands of a seasoned pro. The ability to carve a strong botton turn and redirect the energy into time on the wave face. Its not the recovery thats so interesting here, but the skill level that's exhibited by keeping your focus on riding the wave. This level of proficiency most moves become an extension of your determination to succeed. Your body knows the center of the move and is able to react to the unexpected. Wonton seems to slide out of control yet pulls out a recovery bending at the waist and help from the wave, he is able to get back to a centered position on the board and continue his ride. Pullin movz!
