THIRD GENERATION

20. Sarah PITTS . Sarah Pitts married Seaborne Jones.

She was married to Seborn * JONES I about 1799. Seborn * JONES I died on 12 Sep 1863 in Monroe Co., MS.. He was born in Mill Springs, N.C.. Notes of David P. Smith: Both Mary [he has Mary "Polly" Pitts, daughter of Abner Pitts and Mary Waldrop as wife of Seborn Jones] and Seborn are buried at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Monroe Co., MS. Tombstone birth date for Mary 10 June 1808. U.S. Census records indicate that she was born 1802. Tombstone birth date for Seborn: 1 Jan 1800. U.S. Census records indicate he was born ca. 1795. Death dates for both Mary and Seborn from their tombstones. David P. Smith has 10 children listed for Seaborn Addison Jones and mary "Polly" Pitts born between 1822 and 1840, among them is John Leech Jones b. 1824 and Sebern Adison Jones b. 1836.

[Compiler's Notes: If this Seborn Jones was born 1795 to 1800, then he was certainly not married in 1799. ]

========================
Research of Marca Lee McInnes Murray (Mrs. Buford James Murray) Bjmmlm@aol.comf to Jan Dawson 1999.

John Leech Jones's children come
from the 1850 Laurens Dist., SC, census, the Monroe Co., MS, census and from
some LDS files I got. Sebern and Mary Pitts Jones' son Caleb Jones married
Narcissa C. Beeks, daughter of Samuel Beeks Melinda Andrews. Samuel lead a
wagon train of people from SC to Monroe County before 1850. That is a large
family in Monroe Co. or used to be. When I was taking the Aberdeen, MS
Examiner the Mayor wrote a news column about early families in Monroe Co. I
took the paper for about 2 years until he gave up writing it. About 1965 or
so I think when I started. I have all the copies in a box and someday hope
to go through them again. That and other things are on my long list of
things to do.

John Lee Jones was the 2nd child.

Abigal "Abbie" C. Jones died in child birth after 9 children. I guess you
can say her information comes from the Monroe Co., Mississippi History publis
hed Curtis Media Corp. 1988. Her husband remarried and had 4 more children.

Nancy P. Jones, Monroe Co., Mississippi History

Sarah J. Jones, Monroe Co., Mississippi History, Mary Pitts Jones Estate
papers, Monroe Co., MS

Martha N. Jones, Monroe Co., Mississippi History

Mary F. "Polly" Jones, Monroe Co., Mississippi History, some of her family
live in Plano, TX. One I talked to is an English teacher (about my age) who
was going to work on this when she retires. I sent her a bunch of stuff
about 10 years ago and never even got a thank you. I keep thinking I will
call her and see what she has done. She was the one who called and asked
what I knew.

Sebern Adison Jones, from my grandmother, aunts, and mother who knew him
personally as well as other records, tomb stone, Bible, etc.

Manerva Jones only appears on the 1850 census in Laurens Dist., SC. I assume
she died before 1860 in Monroe Co., MS. I think she would be too young to
have married. I have to assume she was their daughter.

Charles Matthew Jones, Monroe Co., Mississippi History. He and his family
moved to Dallas. I called one of his grandchildren I think. He is or was
about my mother's age. I have never noticed that he died in the paper. I
could have missed it, however. There is a mystery in that part of the
family. I need to look up some way in old newspapers. My double 3rd cousin
in Aberdeen, Jackie Pace Grubbs, told me that his aunt was murdered by a
boyfriend or something in the early 1900's. I just never have known quite
where to start to look for that. I really did not want to ask him since he
did not volunteer to tell me. I do not remember how Jackie knew. One of
Caleb's sons kept a diary. He may have known about it. It must be a
treasure of family history. I remember that his daughter died who had it. I
do not know where it went from there. I do not know if it made it to the
Aberdeen Library. I visited there in 1966 or so when we were there and know
at that time they had a genealogy section. I do not think Jackie knows
because she wanted to read it but the cousin would not let it out of her
house and Jackie did not want to just go over and read and make notes.

I have written to Jackie for years and years but we have never met. We are
3rd cousins on the Jones side and on the Garner side of the family. She
descends from Caleb Jones. He has lots of descendants who never left Monroe
Co., MS. Those who left seemed to leave after the Civil War.

Mary Pitts Jones estate papers gave little clues about the family who moved
away. I did send you those, didn't I? Let me know if you can read them. I
think that I sent those first.

The Mary Pitts who was the daughter of Abner Pitts and Mary Waldrop married
Sebern Jones who was the administrator of Mary Waldrop Pitts's will. She
refers to him as her son in-law. When Mary Pitts Jones's estate was settled
in Monroe Co., MS her son John Leach Jones was living in Salt Lake City.
About 30 or so years ago the Morman church sent me a letter which stated that
John Leach Jones stated his parents were Sebern Jones and Mary Pitts. He
also stated that he was born in Laurens District of SC.

My great grandfather was Sebern Adison Jones a younger brother of John Leach
Jones. He came to Texas after the Civil War and then went to Oklahoma about
the turn of the century (1895 or so). There are many, many descendants of
the Sebern Jones and Mary Pitts who are still living in and around Monroe
Co., MS.

James Waldrop, II, may have married a Mary Pitts but I do not think that it
was the daughter of Abner Pitts. Unfortunately they named lots of girls,
Mary, in the Waldrop and Pitts family.

I look over more of your web site tonight more carefully. You certainly have
put in a tremendous amount of work and research. Thanks again for sharing it
with the rest of us.

I see that Mrs. Rourke says that Sebern
Addison Jones moved to Monroe Co., GA. I do not think that is so. He was in
Laurens, SC, in 1850 and in Monroe Co., MS, in 1860. In our family I think
that Sebern Adison always used one d. I have nothing that says his father
was Sebern Adison Jones but he may have been. I am not real sure about the
tomb stones in Monroe Co., MS. When I saw them in about 1965 or so I thought
they were in good condition to be so old. From the census records I think
they were born earlier than the tomb stones suggest.

Sarah PITTS and Seborn * JONES I had the following children:

child+62 i. Sebern Addison [Seburne] JONES.
child+63 ii. John Leech JONES.
