Summer Series Week 10 of 10 - Tuesday, September 8, 2009
Dave Stiemsma will be our Race Chairman for this LAST week of ALCA racing. If you have any questions, Dave can be reached at 269-760-2698.
This is our LAST night of ALCA races for the 2009 season. Not sure about the forecast - but let's hope for some wind so we can sail.
Year End Party - Saturday, October 17th, 2009
Don't forget to add this date to your calendars. Location will be at Mulligan's Grill and Steakhouse.
The 2009 ALCA Sail-N-Soak (1 Day) Regatta Date - August 30, 2009 - Great FUN!
For those of you that were not able to attend our ALCA regatta - it was fun. Chilly on the water - but fun!
We saw some familiar faces of past. Dale and Diane Van Lopik were on their Hobie 18. They kept saying they were rusty since we have not seen them for a few years. Well....they weren't too rusty - they took 1st place overall in the Hobie 18 fleet. Chuck and Mary Botsis helped as part of our RC personnel. The RC staff ran like a well-oiled machine. We also saw some new faces. Don Wilke just transferred to the Battle Creek area from Buffalo NY and was the voice calling the boats at the line. Steven Varnum is experienced with racing on the water but new to the Hobie 18 catamaran. Even so, Steven and his crew Sara took a 1st place in the first race of the day. Ela Sliwerska is from the Detroit area and took time from her schedule to drive to Austin Lake and crew for Austin Lee on his Hobie 18.
After racing, everyone met back at the home of Jerry and Lori Mohney for lunch, door prizes, and awards (wine glasses etched with our ALCA logo).
Andy Kursch: 1st place Portsmouth
Again, thanks to:
ALCA hosts, Jerry and Lori Mohney, for opening their home for our one day event, and for the use of their tri-toon as our RC boat.
HHmmmmm - what is the date for our 2010 event?

The 2008 ALCA Sail-N-Soak a huge success!
With Dave Stiemsma as the Regatta Chairman and Andy Lenczycki as the Race Committee Chairman, the Austin Lake Regatta went off without a hitch. Saturday had 5 solid races with winds that started at 5-10 MPH and built to 15-20. A variety of race course numbers were employed, including the popular A-C with gates courses and a course 7 (ACABCAC) to finish off the day (for us 'old-timers' that remember an ABC type course). The Open fleet boats (Tiger, H16 Solos, and H18's) got to run an extra A-C lap each race to minimize the between-race wait time. There was seldom a delay of more than 10 minutes between races, and that was usually to allow the awesome course adjustment team of David and Austin Lee to tweek the course marks as needed to keep things interesting. Sailors were off the water by 3 PM in time to partake in hot tubbing for relaxation. Jerry and Lori Mohney hosted the dinner on Saturday night with lots of great food supplied by fleet members and the fleet and a keg that lasted into Sunday! A slide show of (669!) pictures taken from the committee boat was displayed during the night for all participants to marvel at just how great they look on the water (and Myles and Audree IN the water)! Near sunset, everyone was treated to a phenomenal, DOUBLE rainbow that extended from one shore of Austin Lake, to the other. It remained visible for almost 20 minutes.
Sunday started out a little slower, with a 1 hour delay due to a few low hanging rain clouds, but by 11 AM the rain lifted and Race Committee got to work again. The first race started a little slow with 5-10 MPH winds, but by the second race, the wind had increased again to 10-15. The committee boat had the sailors off the water by 1:30 PM in time for everyone to meet back at Jerry & Lori Mohney's to finish off the food and beer left, and for the door prize and trophy presentations. Dave Stiemsma did a wonderful job with the laser-etched trophies, and was able to go 5 deep in both fleets! While everyone talked about the great fun they had over the weekend, Sundays pictures of the racers from the committee boat were again presented in a slide show for all to see.
For all that were there, thanks for supporting our little regatta. For all that didn't make it, plan on attending next years event!

Lifejackets are MANDATORY!
Those participants that do not following this new requirement can be protested by another sailor or disqualified immediately by the Race Committee personnel. Penalty by protest will result in a DSQ if the protest is upheld. Please - think safety, wear those life jackets, and let's leave those protests for more serious issues.
Safety is paramount and when windy – the Race Chairman will try to find a chase boat for on-the-water assistance. However, if a boat flips and there is no chase boat, it is the obligation of every sailor to stop and assist others in distress. (If windy conditions are present, it might be difficult for a one-man boat to lend assistance.) Any sailor lending assistance, can apply for redress for their scoring to be adjusted when providing assistant to another sailor in distress. If you are not comfortable with the night's conditions, please return to shore. If you are in distress or need assistance, please hail another sailor.

Remember, you don't have to own a boat or EVEN sail to
be a member of ALCA. For the nominal fee of $10.00,
you can become a member of the Austin Lake Catamaran
Association. This fee is for the FUN activities for
which we have a very well organized (and inventive and
creative) party committee. For those members that do
own a catamaran and want to race, the racing
membership is an additional $20.00.
If you are interested in being part of our treasured
Race Committee personnel, we would love to have you
on the RC Boat. It's a way to be involved with the
fleet even if you don't have a catamaran. If
you are interested, contact Steve Chapman at 269-329-3221.
