Cuenca and Cuidad Encantada | |||||||||||||||||||||||
More information about our trip to the Cuenca area on 1st November 2001 Previous page Next Page |

Cuenca is a large city of around 40,000 people but it still retains much of its old charm despite the many tourists. The city centre has plenty of smart shops (shoe shops proliferate!) and the old town with its famous 'hanging houses' (built protruding over the edge of the gorge in a precarious manner) and cathedral are well worth seeing. We didn't manage to see too much due to weary children and stress levels in the red zone. |

The Cuidad Encantada (Enchanted City) is 18km from Cuenca and is worth spending a couple of hours (entrance fee 2 euros). There is a vast area of eroded limestone rocks in the form of animals (with some imagination!), bridges and limestone pavements on a grand scale. Great for hide and seek and losing children for many hours. |
