Taurinos continued | |||||||||||||||||||||||
Here are some more events that take place at local fiestas in the Alto Palancia (Castellon) region
Toro Embolados : these tend to be held at midnight for a couple of hours. A rope is attached to the bull and through the embolado post. The bull is pulled into the ring by the crowd and then the crowd gather closely around whilst balls of parrifin soaked rope are clamped to the horns. The balls are then lit and the ring cleared and bull cut free to chase youths around the ring or streets in spectacular fashion. The bull does not seem too perturbed by the flames and when the lights are out it is a great spectacle.
Attaching the 'balls' to the horns, in the bottom right you can see the hand holding the lit taper to ignite them.
Other events- Well organised fiestas may have additional attractions when the 'vacquillas' are in the ring Such as large 'see-saw' operated by two men, when the bull charges towards one of the men he jumps up and is lifted over the bull by the other pushing down on the 'see-saw' A fake cow (with two men inside rather like a poor quality pantomime cow) enters the ring and tries to fool the young bull. This is hilarious and the bull is taken and and even lets the men pull its tail, butt it and pretend to mount it! |

The bull then chases around the ring (or in this case the streets and the ring) spectacular and often quite dangerous due to the fact they don't often start until midnight
