Welcome students, to Hogwarts... You are all now students of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. This school has a fine tradition of teaching magic to many witches and wizards who have went on to become some of the most influential people of our age. People such as, James Potter, Severus Snape and, of course, Cedric Diggory.

Here, we teach two kinds of magic, one is much easier to learn than the other, the first kind is physical magic, which you will learn in subjects such as Potions and Herbology. The second, is a type of inner magic which is much harder to learn and even harder to master...

I, myself, hope to show you some of that inner magic as I go on to teach Defense Against the Dark Arts, one of the most difficult but yet most rewarding classes in Hogwarts.

Now, on to some quick announcements for the first years: Sadly, many of the professors you have read and heard about will not be with us as they are all away for various reasons;

Professor Flitwick is on a voyage of self-discovery in Asia, Professor McGonagall has sadly retired and will be well missed, Professor Snape has taken a year's leave for a sabbatical, Professor Sprout has gone to Brazil to study the magical properties of Amozonian Plants and Binns has now crossed over to heaven, we will miss him.

Many others have also left either on a temporary or permanent basis and sadly you will not get to see them this year, however, we have lined up worthy replacements for them all, and hope you see fit to treat them with the same levels of respect that you treat your teachers with.

Also, the forbidden forest is strictly off limits to all students in all years!

Now, let us get started with a new term, which will hopefully be the best in Hogwarts' long, proud history.
