Anya opened her eyes and starred at the ceiling of the bed. Try as she might, she just could not seem to get any sleep. Maybe it was because of Valdimir's snoring. Maybe she was not as alright as she thought she was. Anya wondered for a moment how long she had been tossing in bed. She sat up and looked around. Dimitri's bed was empty and barely touched. Unable to sleep, she tiptoed out of the room, careful not to wake anybody up.
As she ascended the stairs, she realized that the sky has cleared, and there was stars surrounding the skies. The seas were so calm and glistened under the moonlight. She almost forgot that a storm had brewed just hours before and that she barely escaped certain death.
Just then, she saw a shadow under the sky. Still quite hidden from the deck, she squinted her eyes to get a clearer look. There, she saw the distinct blue silhouette of a person, dancing under the stars. His movements were clumsy-like, yet graceful; almost like a child learning to walk. His arms were outstretched in such a way that it resembled holding an imaginary partner . And he was swaying to the rhythm created by the winds. She watched with bated breath , wondering if she is dreaming. The stars seem to guide his footsteps and highlight his body moments, as he lightly treaded with careful, poised steps. Anya could hardly believe her eyes. For there in the pale lights stood Dimitri. He had an aura of peacefulness surrounding him, like he was dancing with Angels from the heavens, lost in his dreams. She stood there mesmerized , feeling a sense of peace herself. She inched herself forward....
CREAK!
" Who's there?" Dimitri suddenly snapped out of his trance-like state and hurriedly looked around. He seemed almost ashamed to have been discovered by someone. Anya too was flustered, like she had entered some forbidden territory. It was too late to try to run away. Their eyes met awkwardly as they hastily spoke to try to cover up their discomfort.
" Anya!.. I was just..""Sorry...I didn't mean to..."
"How long have you..." "Dimitri I....."
"I just happened to...." "Did you see..."
An uncomfortable silence followed. Dimitri rubbed his left shoulder and shuffled his feet a little.
" Couldn't sleep...so I uh...thought I'd ..." He finally broke the ice. " Me too..." Anya looked down, still too embarrassed to face him.
Silence.
Dimitri cleared his throat and gazed into the star filled sky. Then, almost as if he has received a message from above, he slowly approached Anya. "You wouldn't want to... you know...". He spoke softly as he would an infant and extended his hand out towards her, gesturing to the deck where he had been standing previously. She shyly reciprocated his action, instinctively placing her hand gingerly over his. Without having to finish his sentence, Anya understood.
Her other hand reached out and gently placed on Dimitri's shoulder, while his hand arched over her waist. Anya suddenly felt that the same peacefulness aura that she had experienced watching Dimitri dance. Only this time, the feeling was much more intense, deeper... She felt music, although she could not hear it. The blue glow from the heavens accentuated Dimitri's features once again, this time surrounding her as well, like the channeling of two souls as they merged into one. Dimitri's hair tussled freely in the breeze while Anya's seemed to glow with gentle radiance. A burst of supernovas painted the sky. They were dancing, yet she did not feel her feet move. It was as if Angels were doing the dancing for her, guiding her every gesture. Her eyes met his, and she could feel his warmth. If this was a dream she hoped she would never have to wake up. Deep down she wondered if Dimitri felt the same way.
Dimitri too was entranced by the glow radiated by Anya. She was the missing 'angel' that had been sent to change his life. Something had deeply affected him. What is happening to him? Is this what love is? He couldn't explain it. Dimitri tried hard to rationalize his confusion , but all he could think about was how much he liked.. no... loved Anya. Surely she must know...? Should he tell her? He wondered if Anya did see him dance? What if...? And what would happen should she find out about him? He didn't want to think right now. All he wanted to do was dance with the woman he loved.
No words were exchanged between them, yet they seem to have an unexplainable bond between them. Two young lovers lost in a world of their own, watched by the angels and the cosmos as they waltzed under the pale moonlight....
