The Honey Video

From E! Gossip Show:

"'Honey, I'm home!' That's what Mariah Carey could have said while shooting her new music video 'Honey' way down in Puerto Rico. Now we have heard that she has a hairstylist that gets $5000 a day and was made to stay an extra day in Puerto Rico to make sure that Mariah was perfect. And they had to rent a private plane at $20,000 to send him back to New York. Anyway the `Honey' music video is quite interesting: There is a princess locked up in a mansion, she's tied to a chair and she tries to escape, and 4 thugs are following her, she dives out of a window, swims in a swimming pool and then goes waterskiing away. I wonder where they got this idea of a princess held prisoner in a mansion from?"

From Australia's "New Weekly":

MARIAH CAREY may have split up from her older husband TOMMY MOTTOLA, but he's still her boss. And the Sony head honcho will be none to pleased when he sees these pics of Mariah as she frolics around with a mystery friend on the set of her latest video in Puerto Rico. The singer looked like Bond girl URSULA ANDRESS as she strutted around in a bikini. "You could see she was enjoying the fact she was on her own and in charge of her life," says our insider. Friends say over-protective Tommy never allowed his wife to spend time with the rap artists who are now helping her produce tracks on her new album. "This is the new Mariah Carey," say her pal. "It's sexy, exciting and no one can stop her."

And here are some photos of Mariah shooting her video from New Weekly:

Mariah on CNN Showbiz

Last night, CNN reported that after Mariah's separation from her husband, she spent 6 days cooped up in a hotel room (in Miami I think) not seeing anybody but just ordering things from room service. They played a clip of Mariah at the FAF fundraiser. Thanks to Adam from Vision for the scoop.

Mariah rumored to be seeing Derek Jeter

From The Globe:

IT'S A HIT! MARIAH FALLS FOR BASEBALL SLUGGER

Now that singer Mariah Carey and Sony music mogul Tommy Mottola have split, the sexy songbird is playing the field--with hunky New York Yankee Derek Jeter, say sources.

"Mariah's in heaven," says a pal. "She's upset about the bust-up with Tommy. But once she accepted she had to get on with her life, meeting Derek was a blessing."

Their romance heated up when Mariah, 27, spotted a poster of the sexy 22-year old shortstop in a Big Apple shop, says the pal.

"She took one look at his green eyes and rugged good looks and melted. She wanted to know who he was."

Mariah sent the dashing 1996 Rookie of the Year a little note saying she was a big fan, insiders reveal.

"She was thrilled when Derek sent back a thank-you note with box seat tickets to a Yankees game," says a source. "She said, 'Wait a minute, what am I doing? I don't even like baseball!'"

But she definitely liked being with the muscular athlete, pals say.

After the game, Mariah invited Derek out to dinner. And they've been together ever since.

GLOBE first reported that Mariah's four-year marriage to controlling Tommy was on the rocks in May. A few weeks later they announced they were separating.

But she swears she never two-timed her 47-year-old hubby during their marriage, say friends.

"Mariah's very concerned about Tommy thinking she already had derek in line," says a pal. "But Derek came along after she broke up with Tommy."

Mariah's spokesperson Cindy Berger denies the singer is seeing anyone, but sources say she's never been happier.

She's moved out of the upstate 20,000-square-foot mansion she shared with Tommy and is looking for a Manhattan pad.

Says the pal, "Mariah's ready to start a life of her own."

-------------------------
Contrary to Globe reports, The Star tabloid reported that Derek is NOT seeing Mariah. When the tabloid asked him about it, Derek reportedly laughed and replied, "They've had me with Toni Braxton, Daisy Fuentes, and now Mariah. I don't know where they get this stuff from."

Here are some rather interesting tidbits: Derek Jeter was listed in the last issue of People Magazine's 50 Most Beautiful. His fave singer happens to be Mariah Carey and like Mariah, he has a diverse background (he is black, white, Italian, and Jewish). Derek's usual routine before every baseball game involves listening to Mariah via headphones while he's changing into his uniform. Hmmm.... Apparently, it helps him to calm down. I got this information from Sports Illustrated online, which had a really nice article on Derek and his fairy tale story. Here is a photo of him and here is a Derek Jeter fan site.

So what's the truth? Hey, just because we don't know for sure, doesn't mean we don't have an opinion about it.

Do you think Mariah is dating Derek Jeter?

Mysterious Backup Singer in Trey Lorenz Song

Those of you keeping up with the latest Mariah news should already know that Mariah sings backup for her friend Trey Lorenz (the "I'll Be There" guy) in a song called "Make You Happy" from the Men In Black soundtrack. The mystery, though, is that Mariah's name isn't listed in the credits of the song. Instead, the backup singer is "Honey B. Fly." Hmmm... this sounds familiar...maybe it's the title of Mariah's new album and single?

July 5, 1997: MTV has just recently picked up this story and reveals that yes, Honey B. Fly is Mariah Carey (what a surprise!). The reason for this name change is...well, something to do with being mysterious. The way I see it, it's an attempt to get publicity, which, I must say, worked like a charm.

Hear the song...

"Hero" lawsuit dropped

From Sheila Narasimhan of Eternal Visions:

"I don't know if any of you heard but the case of "Hero" was dropeed and Christopher Seletti (a former bodyguard of Mariah's - actually, it was Sly Stallone - ) was charged a $5000 fine.

The judge was disgusted with Seletti and said he had seen some ludicrous cases in the past but this was the one which took the cake as far as his career went.

Mariah provided her diary where it was filled with lyrics and 3 revisions of Hero' on Nov 21, 23, 27 1992... There were a lot of doodlings and rhyming words... as well as other lyrics to songs which appeared on Music Box..

Seletti never showed his evidence which was an envelope he never opened and mailed himself. His song was entitled "a Hero lies in you". Mariah claims that she had never even met Seletti. Seletti decided to go public with the case and withold the evidence as long as possible til he was fined... Seletti still did not have any evidence and the case had been going on for 1 year. Judge Chin said "Carey's provided the diary promptly while Seletti kept dragging the litigations on....

(may 22nd 1997 is the date the case was dropped)

Mariah's Brother Arrested

From the June 22nd New York Daily News:

As if Mariah Carey doesn't have enough concerns, her brother was arrested in Los Angeles on Thursday. Morgan Carey, 36, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon at his L.A. home, after allegedly shooting at a friend with a 9mm automatic at 1 a.m. during a dispute, police said. Lawrence Dwonch, who was unhurt, was also arrested, charged with threatening Carey. Carey spent the night in L.A. County Jail and was released the next day on $30,000 bail.

Questions posed to the singer's spokeswoman, Cindi Berger, got a firm "No comment."

The pop diva just announced a separation from her husband and boss, Sony Records chief Tommy Mottola, and has been showing the strain with an apparent weight gain.

Carey, 27, has long coped with family problems. In 1994, her mother, Patricia, had to fight Mariah's sister Alison, an HIV-positive recovering drug addict and former hooker, for custody of Alison's 7-year-old son. In 1981, Morgan Carey admitted during the murder trial of Virginia Maddox that he had accepted $1,200 to kill her husband, but never had any intention of carrying out the murder.

The platinum-selling Mariah has said of her older brother, who batled cerebral palsy to become a physical trainer, "He was my hero growing up."

New Album to be Released Aug. 26th

Billboard's list of upcoming releases shows Mariah's new album release date as August 26th. The title of the new album is "TBA" (to be announced). Sony, however, said that the name will be "Butterfly." Keep in mind though that the accuracy of any of these reports cannot be guaranteed and are subject to change. See the list for yourself.

Mariah was expected at "Hercules" premiere

In Disney's press release, Mariah was listed as one of the "expected guests" at the premiere for the upcoming animation "Hercules" in New York City. No word on whether Mariah did attend. The extravagant premiere, including a huge parade, was broadcast on E! Entertainment Channel. So if any of you saw Mariah there, tell me.

Mariah seen at FAF fundraiser

Today's Gossip Show on E! Entertainment Channel reports that Mariah was at a Fresh Air Fund dinner with a very handsome man, her first public appearance since her separation with Tommy Mottola. Before we jump to conclusions, let me say that the man escorting her was her cousin. I can't remember much details, but her cousin stood up during the middle of the dinner and donated $10,000 fronted by Mariah to the FAF. As for Mariah's appearance, she has totally straightened out her hair, and has bangs too. Her hair also looks very blond. My suggestion: change the look!!

Updated June 20: This week's People magazine has a picture of Mariah at the fundraiser with Tommy Hilfiger. The caption reads, "Songbird Mariah Carey didn't miss a beat after announcing her seperation from husband Tommy Mottola. She joined designer Tommy Hilfiger at a Manhattan benefit raising $1.2 million for inner-city youth." See the picture at http://www.mariahc.com/pictures/pics/342.jpg

What do you think about her new look? Discuss it at The Message Board.

By Liz Smith from a recent column in The New York Post

"Mariah Tells You"

IF YOU were passing by one of Manhattan's ubiquitous recording studios the other night and saw a dishy, petite and exhausted female stretched out on the front of her car taking a nap - well, you were viewing Mariah Carey "in action," so to speak. (One of two assistants stood by, guarding her.)

The multi-platinum recording diva is stretched to the max these days. She is not only fighting hayfever, but fighting time - running between studios . . . recording a new song, "Honey," which will be the first single on her new album . . . negotiating a big movie deal . . . and setting up a world tour.

And the biggest stress of all - Mariah continues to fight nasty speculation surrounding her recent split from Sony music titan Tommy Mottola. Although both Tommy and Mariah categorize their separation as "amicable," other voices from other rooms beg to disagree. Mariah, faced with the gossip, sighed and said to me, "Some people just have to create drama and jump to hateful conclusions and concoct things."

I don't know for sure if Mariah was referring obliquely to the negative story on her marriage published in Vanity Fair not long ago, but she says she wants to get the following on record: "My talent is a gift for which I am grateful. And I am lucky to do something I love so much for a living. I am now in a new place. I've always written and co-produced my work, but now I'm doing even more on my own. As for Tommy, we still talk every day. We love each other very much. We will always be family. I would never want Tommy not to be a part of my life, but at this point, it's best for us to live apart. We are going to continue our professional relationship no matter what. Tommy is brilliant, a great businessman, in a class by himself. In fact, we are getting along better since we've been apart."

I asked the weary Mariah, who said she'd been up all night working, whether she and Mottola might ever get back together. "Well, I never say never . . . anything could happen. But right now, we are standing by our original statement. And I am taking some time, getting to know what it feels like to be on my own.

"And before you ask - no, there is no `other person' involved in our separation."

So there it is. Straight from Mariah to me to you.
[End of Article]

My question is: why the heck was Mariah sleeping on top of her car? Anyway, a recent Australia newpaper also says that "MARIAH Carey has spoken about her now-defunct four-year marriage to record company executive Tommy Mottola. One report from the US has Carey comparing herself with a princess trapped in a gilded cage. Now they've split, Carey may be able to branch out into acting - a move Mottola had apparently been against."

Well, it seems that Mariah is still unsure about her relationship. But I have to agree with Tommy against Mariah being an actress. What do you think?

Provocative Pose in E.W.

Much discussion has swirled around the picture of Mariah in this week's Entertainment Weekly. In the picture, she's showing some cleavage that might not have been tasteful. See it for yourself at http://www.mariahc.com/pictures/pics/332.jpg

Mariah in the Movies?

(Reuter) Now that Mariah Carey is splitting up with husband Tommy Mottola, the Sony Music honcho who took her to stardom, she might be making a career change, too. A friend told Entertainment Weekly that Carey is interested in acting. "She talks all the time about Madonna and Whitney Houston,'' the friend says. "Whenever she sees them in a movie, she says that what she wants, too.'' She's been working with acting coach Sheila Gray, who describes Carey as having "power and soul'' and determination.

Divorce Rumors Confirmed

Two days after USA Today reported that "Mariah Carey appears not to be breaking up with hubby and Sony Records chief Tommy Mottola, despite tabloid reports. Spokeswomen for both deny any problem. Carey is recording in a New York studio." , The Washington Post reports that "Singer Mariah Carey and Sony music executive Tommy Mottola are moving on and away from each other. In a joint statement, the couple said they had 'mutually and amicably' agreed to a trial separation, but would remain friends and continue their professional relationship." This confirms my theory that spokespeople can lie through their teeth. In addition, a friend quoted Mariah as saying they tried to make it work, but it wouldn't. Neither Mariah nor Tommy wanted to further discuss the matter.

Read other articles about the separation:

From E! Gossip Show:

"A lot of people knew that Tommy Mottola and Mariah Carey were heading for the rocks, because for months Mariah was looking for her own Manhattan apartment, and by the way I heard she turned down Madonna's Central Park West digs. Now the New York Observer now reports Tommy Mottola is looking for his own Manhattan apartment but he's having a rough time of it. See he was interested in moving in to the luxiourios Duplex apartment currently owned by violinist Isaac Stern, but the co-op board turned him down and speculation is that they just felt that Tommy is too much of a gun toating thug, or at least that's his image. I don't think so, Tommy. I think you're nice. OK?"

Celebrity Online Auction for the TJ Martell Foundation

Fantasy Outfit Sony celebs donated various items for the auction. Mariah donated her "Fantasy" video outfit, which is "a cut-off pair of blue jean shorts, a cropped V-neck T-shirt and a gold belly chain." She signed the shorts. Someone on Vision said he bid $2200 for it, and didn't get it!

Mariah also spoke at the event as expected, and it was broadcast online via RealAudio. She talked about Dave Glew, who received the Humanitarian of the Year award and how he got in the business.

"Mariah Carey in Street Fight With Producer"

New York City pedestrians were witness to an abominable and disheartening scene Saturday as pop star Mariah Carey engaged in a rabid screaming match with her longtime producer, Walter Afanasieff. A source told the New York Daily News that the miniskirted diva cursed loudly at Afanasieff before finally putting an end to the fight by firing him. The reputed reason for the fight was Afanasieff's new gal pal, Samantha Cole, who is making her first record under superproducer David Foster. "I don't understand how someone of Mariah's stature could be envious of someone just coming up," Cole's record-company representative told the paper. Carey's spokesperson, Leslee Dart, denies that Afanasieff was fired, and says that their dispute erupted over creative differences. "He got mad and she got mad," Dart says. "She didn't want the album to sound overproduced. She was protecting what she felt was her creative position on the album." She should have been protecting her voice. We hear that she can curse you out in seven octaves. That's murder on the vocal chords, dear.

From Billboard Online:

'Men In Black' Soundtrack Launches New Will Smith Deal

Actor/recording artist Will Smith is about to sign a multi-year worldwide deal with Columbia Records that will start this month with the release of Smith's first single for the label, the title track from Columbia Pictures' "Men In Black," starring Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. Ken Schlager writes in Billboard Bulletin that Columbia Records plans a July 1 U.S. release of the "Men In Black" soundtrack, which also includes songs by Mariah Carey featuring Trey Lorenz; Snoop Doggy Dogg featuring Da Brat; the Roots featuring D'Angelo; Tony Rich, Az Yet, and Ginuwine. The film's title track, a rap by Smith with a guest appearance by SWV member Coko, goes to radio May 21, and Smith's first solo album for Columbia is due in spring 1998. Smith broke onto the scene in 1988 as half of D.J. Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, one of the first rap acts to achieve pop prominence. He extended his popularity as the likable star of the TV sitcom "The Fresh Prince of Bel Aire" and proved his box-office power with last summer's mega-hit "Independence Day."

Instead of the songs by Mariah featuring Trey, it's now thought to be the other way around - a song by Trey featuring Mariah. Sources from Sony say this is a NEW song from Trey Lorenz and is thought to be called "Make You Happy."

Allure's New Album...

Has been scheduled for release on May 20th. However, many people have always bought copies of the album since stores like Best Buy ignore official dates and sell them early.

Typically in the past the prior year award winner presents to the new recipent of the award. Sony is backing the T.J. Mariah not in "Every Nation"

A Feb. 27th USA Today Article reported that Mariah was one of the artists to sing in the R. Kelley song "Every Nation," a song "aimed at helping fight against AIDS in minority communities." However, the Red Hot Organization (the people putting together this project) stated that Mariah will NOT be on this track. There has been no word on the reason.

Release of Allure's First Single

Allure's single "Head Over Heels" has been officially released and is now on sale in the U.S. Here is info about the single from Ken Sims:

Head Over Heels featuring N A S

Tracks are as follows:
1. Head Over Heels 4:13
2. Head Over Heels (Trackmasters Mix) 3:53
3. Head Over Heels (No Rap) 3:32
4. Head Over Heels (Instrumental) 3:49

All vocal arrangements by M. Carey / Recorded at Crave Studios

Selling price in U.S. about $3.50
And a review of the song in the "New and Noteworthy" section of Billboard Magazine:
Allure - Head over heels 4:13
Producers: Mariah Carey , Trackmasters
Writers: M.Carey, Nas, Poke & Tone, G.Pearson
Crave/Trackmasters 9706

Boy is there a lot riding in this single. It marks the premiere of not one, but two high-profile new Sony imprints - Mariah Carey's Crave Records and hip-hop hit machine the Trackmasters' new eponymous label. That's a mighty heavy weight to lay upon the petite shoulders of this charming young female quartet. Fortunately, they are up to the challenge. They are as adept as swapping soulful lead vocal lines as they are at blending smooth harmonies, making the most of the song's playfully romantic lyrics and sleek infectious jeep groove. Hip-hop credibility comes via a guest appearance by Nas, though it if likely that most pop programmers will go directly to the rapfree mix, which lets the ladies cut loose without obstacles.

Mariah's latest look Mariah's label Crave has officially debuted. In her new role as record executive, Mariah will be working with Rick Bisceglia (President) from Arista Records and David Glew (Chairman) of Epic Records. Also, check out Mariah's latest look! Shorter and curlier hair.

Billboard's Allure Review

This week's Billboard Magazine mentions the new group Allure, which is on Mariah's label Crave:
"The wait for a taste of Mariah Carey's new Epic-distributed label Crave Records, ends with the onset of "Head over heels" by female quartet Allure. Produced and written by the pop superstar with the Trackmasters, the track chugs at a seductive jeep/funk pace that allows for some leisurely and oh-so-lovely harmonies. The lead vocals are underlined by a subtle piano line that gives the song a haunting texture. Also carrying the logo of the Trackmasters' new eponymous Sony label, "Head over heels" previews Allure's self-titled album, which is due in April. There is no word on an uptempo remix yet, but we're confident that the savvy and always inclusive La C has something planned for clubland."

Underneath The Stars

"Underneath The Stars" has been released as a promo. The promo has three tracks: the album version, the Drifting Re-mix, and the Drifting Re-mix with rap. Both remixes were done by Trackmasters. The commercial release of "Underneath The Stars" in the United States is not likely at this point, although it has been released already as a B-Side to "Forever" in some countries.

Every Time I Close My Eyes

Mariah sings background vocals in Babyface's new album "The Day" on a song called "Every Time I Close My Eyes." It is expected to be the second single released. In the liner notes of his album, Babyface regarded Mariah as "a great producer, a great writer, a superb artist, but most of all...a good friend." a tremendous compliment from perhaps the greatest producer ever. In my opinion, the song is spectacular and if you like R&B, the album is very worth getting as well.
