"Actor Wounds Himself On Set of TV Series"

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 13 (AP) -- Jon-Erik Hexum, a television actor, was in critical condition today after he accidentally shot himself in the head Friday with a blank-loaded pistol on the set of the CBS-TV series "Cover Up," a studio spokesman said.

Mr. Hexum, 26 years old, was transferred to the intensive care unit at the Beverly Hills Medical Center. He will be kept sedated until the swelling in his head subsides, according to Vince Panettiere, a publicist for 20th Century Fox Studios.

Mr. Hexum underwent five hours of surgery, performed by a neurosurgical team headed by Dr. David Ditsworth. Mr. Panettiere quoted Dr. Ditsworth as saying Mr. Hexum was struck in the right temple. The force of the blank charge fired at close range fractured the bone, but there was no penetration, Mr. Pannetiere said.

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- Jon-Erik Hexum, a television actor critically injured with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, was playing Russian roulette at the time of the shooting, the police said Tuesday.

Detective Gary Fullerton said that Mr. Hexum had loaded three empty cartridges and two gunpowder-filled blanks into a high-powered handgun before saying, "'Let's see if I've got one for me,' and fired the gun."

The force of the blank round's explosion fractured the actor's skull near his right temple.

Mr. Hexum, 27 years old, who shot himself on the "Cover Up" television series set last Friday, underwent five hours of surgery at Beverly Hills Medical Center.

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 19 (AP) -- Jon-Erik Hexum, a television actor who inadvertently shot himself in the head with a blank-loaded pistol, has died, officials said today. He was 26 years old.

The hospital where Mr. Hexum had been treated since the accident Oct. 12 on the set of the "Cover Up" television series notified the Los Angeles County coroner's office on Thursday night that the actor was brain dead, a coroner's investigator, Phil Campbell, said.

He is survived by his mother, Gretha, of Los Angeles, and a brother, Gunnar, of Boston.


"Las Vegas Escort Operator Is Given Heart of TV Actor"

LAS VEGAS, Nev., Oct. 22 (AP) -- The heart of the actor Jon-Erik Hexum, who died from a shooting accident on the set of his television series, has been transplanted into the body of a Las Vegas escort service owner who otherwise would have died within weeks, his cardiologist said today.

The transplant patient, Michael Washington, 36 years old, owns Swinging Suzy's, which advertises "Las Vegas' Most Beautiful Escorts," and a small advertising agency. He learned of the donor hear late Thursday and flew to San Francisco early Friday, said his cardiologist, Dr. Charles Rugeroli.

November 1, 1984

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 31 (UPI) -- A funeral service for Jon-Erik Hexum, who accidentally shot himself in the head on the set of his new television series, will be private, a spokesman for the Westwood Village Mortuary said today. The 26-year-old actor shot himself in the temple with a prop gun loaded with blanks Oct. 12 in a break in the taping of his CBS series "Cover Up" at 20th Century Fox studios. He lapsed into a coma immediately and was pronounced dead six days later.
