These collectables, which are now likely part of the earth's upper atmosphere, were bought at Flagstaff Mall, and were Carl's largest gift to Denise Gottlieb. It was snowing lightly when he got to Flagstaff. The mall theater was showing Oliver & Company and Homeward Bound 2 -- which was rather appropriate for this moment.
Unfazed by the lower temperatures, he was determined to please Denise. Initially planning on getting two or three items, he decided to splurge when he learned that the store was having a bargain sale. Incredibly he saved over thirty dollars, but this temporary lapse of common sense would cost him in the long run.
One must conclude that he went a little overboard here, as this was too many items for a first impression. Yes, he saved a lot of money, but having inked out the price tags there was no way others could have known that. This overly generous act could have exacerbated the already apprehensive attitude of her sister Rhonda and stepfather Jason, and was likely the clincher that sealed Carl's fate.
Adding to the problem was the fact that a new worker named Ginger went to the Gottliebs' door when Denise was dropped off, and told Rhonda and Jason about the gifts. Carl knew he was taking a chance that they might not approve of this, and snapped this photo so the memory of this day could live on long after the items were destroyed.
