American Beauty : Kevin Spacey is in negotiations to star in American Beauty,which will be the film-directing debut of Sam Mendes. Spacey will play a 42-year-old man who decides to liberate himself from a boring job and a loveless marriage. While his daughter falls for a strange boy who has moved next door, Spacey’s character transforms himself into a buff, confident hunk — but the lives of those around him unravel, with tragic consequences. Spacey is about to head to Ireland to star in Ordinary Decent Criminal, a fictional film based on Irish gangster Martin Cahill, who led something of a Robin Hood life during the ’70s and ’80s.

Black and White : James Toback's next film is Black and White and it's about Robert Downey Jr. a gay husband and Brooke Shields who plays his wife, a documentary film maker chronicling some upper East Side white kids infatuated with hip hop and two of these kids are Bijoux Phillips and Elijah Wood. Ben Stiller will play the NYPD detective who investigates after their infatuation leads to murder.

The Limey : Director Steven Soderbergh (Out of Sight) has assembled a 1960s-iconic cast for his next pic, The Limey. The cast includes Peter Fonda, Terence Stamp, Lesley Ann Warren and Ann-Margret. Limey is about an Englishman, Wilson (Stamp), who arrives in Los Angeles to avenge his daughter’s murder and finds himself drawn into a world of glitz and crime. Fonda plays the lead antagonist. Warren plays Elaine, an acting teacher drawn to helping Wilson in his quest.

Guy Gets Kid : Joey Lauren Adams (Chasing Amy), is set to star in Columbia Pictures' Adam Sandler comedy Guy Gets Kid. Director is Dennis Dugan, is set to start shooting this month. It tells the story of a cynical slacker who tries to find some fulfillment when his best friend gets married. He then adopts a 6-year-old boy and gets more than he bargained for.

Jeffrey Wigand : Rip Torn ( MIB) has joined Al Pacino and Russell Crowe in the cast of Michael Mann’s Touchstone pic about tobacco industry whistleblower Jeffrey Wigand. Still-untitled pic is presently lensing in New York for a planned 1999 release. Teitlebaum and David.

Cider House Rules : Kate Nelligan (Prince of Tides)has inked a deal that will place her opposite Paul Rudd in the Miramax-distribbed pic, Cider House Rules. Nelligan will play Olive, the mother of Wally Worthington (Rudd), an Army pilot on leave at home due to his father’s death. Tobey Maguire plays Homer Wells, an orphan who falls in love with a black woman.

Boiler Room : Ben Affleck is in talks to star as an aggressive Yuppie stockbroker in Boiler Room. Filming could begin in New York as early as mid-November.The film is about the high-pressured world of Wall Street boiler rooms, where young stockbrokers peddle highly dubious stock to unsuspecting buyers. Ben Affleck is not focused on the lead role of Seth, a college dropout who descends into the world of corrupt stock trading.Boiler Room will mark the feature directorial debut of Ben Younger, a video director who also penned the screenplay.

Chill Factor : Cuba Gooding Jr. is in negotiations to star opposite Skeet Ulrich in adventure suspense pic Chill Factor. The film is about two men who must keep a highly toxic substance below 50 degrees, or risk disastrous contamination. Hugh Johnson is directing th film.

Lost Souls : Ben Chaplin who was last seen in Washington Square has been set to co-star with Winona Ryder in New Line Cinema's Lost Souls, the directing debut of cinematographer Janusz Kaminski.the film is about a devout young woman who must convince a skeptical prosecutor that he is the target of a conspiracy to enable the devil to walk the earth. Shooting begins Oct. 1 in New York and Los Angeles.

Harlem Aria : Paul Sorvino is negotiations to star in Harlem Aria. The film cast includes Damon Wayans, Gabriel Cas-seus, Christian Camargo, Edye Byrde, Malik Yoba and Victoria Dillard. Film is about a fairy tale about a young, handicapped man who dreams of becoming an opera singer.

Gladiator : Russell Crowe is near a deal to star for director Ridley Scott in Gladiator, an epic-sized film on the order of Ben-Hur and Spartacus set in the Roman chariot days. Crowe would play a Roman general who is the presiding Caesar’s most fearsome and respected warrior. When the leader falls ill, he designates the general to succeed him. The Caesar’s son, however, has other plans. He strips the general of his stripes and family and banishes him. The general becomes part of the world of gladiators, where fight-to-the-death battles are framed around the pageantry of a Roman circus atmosphere. The warrior battles his way to a final fight that will lead him to a match — and a chance for revenge — against the man who banished him.

Passion of Mind : Stellan Skarsgard and William Fichtner will both play leading men opposite Demi Moore in Lakeshore and Paramount Classics’ Passion of Mind. The pair play the men in Moore’s separate but parallel lives in the Alain Berliner-helmed drama, which is set to start lensing later this month. Peter Riegert is close to a deal to play Moore’s psychologist, according to sources. The Ron Bass-scripted pic follows Moore’s character as she tries to resolve her seemingly simultaneous lives as a widowed American mother living in the South of France and a single, successful Gotham book editor. Skarsgard plays a French novelist; Fichtner, a New York accountant.

Prince of Central Park : Danny Aiello, Cathy Moriarty, Paul Sorvino and young newcomer Frankie have joined Kathleen Turner in the cast of Seagal/Nasso Prods.’ family pic Prince of Central Park, which recently started shooting in New York. Based on Evan Rhodes’ 1974 novel and subsequent long-running play, Prince concerns a young boy who runs away from an abusive foster home and takes up residence in the famed Gotham glade.John Leekley will make his feature directorial debut on the pic. Jules Nasso and Steven Seagal will produce.
