Mission: Impossible 2 : Anthony Hopkins is set to star opposite Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible 2. In the film, Hopkins will play Cruise's boss. Ian McKellen had been in talks to take that role in the film which John Woo is now shooting in Australia. Ving Rhames, Thandie Newton and Dougray Scott also star in the sequel to Mission: Impossible. The Patriot : Heath Ledger (10 Things I Hate About You) will star in The Patriot. He will play Gabriel, son of Mel Gibson’s character, a farmer who reluctantly takes up arms against the British when the fighting reaches his town. The two end up battling side by side in the quest for U.S. independence. The fil is helmed by Roland Emmerich (Independence Day, Godzilla). Paranoia : Jeanne Tripplehorn will join John Duigan’s (Sirens, Molly)latest film, Paranoia. The film also stars Iain Glen (Silent Scream), Ewen Bremner (Trainspotting) and Kevin Whately (The English Patient) . The film is about a young fashion model, who, exhausted from her hectic work schedule, takes a weekend off in the country with her new boyfriend. However, the weekend is not as relaxing as she had hoped, when the boyfriend’s chums ignite a weekend of escalating paranoia. Boesman and Lena : Danny Glover and Angela Bassett will co-star in Boesman and Lena which is the film version of Athol Fugard’s play. John Berr has adapted the play and will direct. Dancing in the Dark : Angelina Jolie (Gia) is in final talks to play a femme fatale in Dancing in the Dark. The film is about a wealthy tycoon who marries a woman who turns out to be a deceptive seductress. Michael Cristofer will direct from his own adaptation from Cornell Woolrich's suspense novel, Waltz into Darkness. Update: April 22th,1999 The Legend of Bagger Vance : Robert Redford will direct The Legend of Bagger Vance. He will also co-produce and star. The film is about a local golfer, WWI hero Rannulph Junah (Redford), who gets a chance to compete against golf greats Walter Hagen and Bobby Jones in a tournament in 1931, when racial discrimination prevails and golf is almost a religion. During the tournament, Junah is given both spiritual and golf guidance by a mysterious black caddy, Bagger Vance. Morgan Freeman is the top choice to play the role of Vance. Mission: Impossible 2 : Brendan Gleeson (The General) will play in Mission: Impossible 2 opposite Tom Cruise. In the film, Gleeson will play an upper-class British industrialist a la Rupert Murdoch who is charming on the surface but the opposite underneath. Taken : Steven Spielberg is set to produce a 20-hour miniseries with the channel about alien abductions called Taken for Sci-Fi Channel. Simpatico : Fine Line Features has paid $3 million for domestic rights of Simpatico.The film is now in post production. sniper who comes out of self-imposed isolation to stop an assassination,
only to be implicated for the murder in the film Shooter.
The movie was adapted from the 1993 novel Point of Impact
by film critic Stephen Hunter. Woody Allen's untitled project : Screenwriter Elaine May (Primary Colors, The Birdcage) will take her first screen acting role in the ensemble cast of Woody Allen's next project. Allen is writing and directing the untitled picture, in which he stars opposite Michael Rapaport, Tracey Ullman, Hugh Grant and Jon Lovitz. Quills : Kate Winslet and Geoffrey Rush are near to deal to star in Quills, the story of the climactic days of the Marquis de Sade which director Philip Kaufman will direct. Joaquin Phoenix is also in preliminary talks with for a starring role. Rush is near a deal to play de Sade, who at the start of the tale is confined in an asylum, ostensibly for his pornographic writings. While wildly popular, they’re deemed indecent and prompt his incarceration.Winslet plays Madeleine, a maid who is de Sade’s contact with the world and who helps get his feisty scribblings to the populace. Phoenix is being wooed to play the role of an attractive young priest who runs the asylum and engages in a battle of wills with de Sade over the young girl. Erin Brockovich : Aaron Eckhart (In the Company of Men) and Albert Finney are set to co-star with Julia Roberts in Erin Brockovich. Stephen Soderbergh directs the pic which is about a twice-divorced college dropout (Roberts) with three young children, who becomes a legal secretary for a personal injury law firm and proves instrumental in winning one of the largest personal injury lawsuits ever. Eckhart will play a biker and Roberts’ love interest who lives next door and ends up taking care of her kids while she is righting the world’s wrongs. Finney will play a pseudo-mentor and senior attorney in Roberts’ firm, a small-time personal injury banner. The picture is untitled yet and expected to begin this summer in New York. Allen is also writing the screenplay and will co-star in the film.
