High and Low : Martin Scorsese wants to make a new version of Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low. David Mamet is in talks to write and direct. Steve Martin, William H. Macy and Joe Mantegna are in talks to star in the film. The film is based on a novel by Ed McBain which is the story of a business executive who is financially ruined when he nobly pays ransom money to kidnappers who mistakenly grabbed his chauffeur’s son.

kennethbranaghMacbeth : Kenneth Branagh will shoot Macbeth which he is writing and will play the title role as the Scottish nobleman who murders his way to the throne. No other cast is yet known but he will possibly not direct the film.

The Body : Antonio Banderas is in negotiations to play a Catholic priest in The Body. Banderas mission is to investigate a potentially devastating archaeological to find the bones of Jesus Christ. Jonas McCord will direct the pic who also adapted the script from a novel by Richard Ben Sapier. Kristin Scott Thomas (The English Patient) also wants to star as the Israeli archaeologist who finds the skeleton. Banderas wants $12 million to play the lead.

Mission to Mars VS Alone : Hollywood Reporter reports that Warners and Village Roadshow are filming a science-fiction project previously titled Alone, in hopes of beating Walt Disney Studios’ Mission to Mars to the screen. According to Hollywood Reporter Warner Bros. wants the film to be directed by commercials director Anthony Hoffman. The studio has offers out to Meg Ryan and Joseph Fiennes to star. Mission to Mars will be directed by Brian De Palma and set to roll in Julyand stars Tim Robbins, Gary Sinise and Don Cheadle.

The Visitors : Jean Reno, Malcolm McDowell and Christina Applegate begun to work on the remake of the French comic hit Les Visiteurs. Jean-Marie Poire is directing the film which he directed in 1993 original. Reno is reprising his role as a time-traveling Gallic knight, and Christian Clavier, as his wisecracking servant. The update differs from the original in that Reno and Clavier are sent from the Middle Ages to the modern-day U.S. rather than to contemporary France. The role of the magician, who mistakenly starts the time-travel adventure, has been beefed up, and McDowell has landed the part. Applegate will play the female lead, a role handled by Valerie Lemercier in the original.

Shiny New Enemies : Salma Hayek is in final negotiations to star Shiny New Enemies. The cast includes Jeff Goldblum, Steve Zahn and Orlando Jones. Pic is centers on the life of a barber (Zahn) born under a bad sign who starts his day intending to commit suicide, then watches as things get worse. Hayek will play Sgt. Meredith Kolko, a centerfold turned top-notch detective who is assigned to the heist of the Shiny New Enemies, a batch of precious ancient coins that end up in the barber’s possession. Goldblum will tackle the role of Avnet, an unsavory sort hired to steal the coins. And Jones will play a drag queen, Miss Coco.

Horror Anthology : John Landis will make a deal to produce a horror anthology featurer. His production company St. Clare Entertainment developes the anthology that will consist of four segments directed by different filmmakers including him.

Druids : Christopher Lambert is set to star in Druids which Jacques Dorfmann will direct. He will play Gallic chieftain Vercingetorix, who waged a bloody and ultimately unsuccessful military campaign against Julius Caesar. Max von Sydow and Klaus Maria Braundauer, who will play Caesar is in the cast of the historical action drama.

L'Intern : Dominique Swain (Lolita) is in final talks to star in L'Intern. She will play a young, underappreciated intern at the ultra-hip magazine Skirt, who must learn to deal with kissy-face phoniness, model tantrums and bulimic editors. Meanwhile, the fashionista-in-training longs to steal the heart of a dashing British art director from the grips of the supermodel du jour.which takes a peek under the skirt of the fashion industry in all its superficial splendor. Michael Lange (The X-Files, The Larry Sanders Show) will make his feature helming debut.

Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas : Jeffrey Tambor (The Larry Sanders Show) is in final negotiations to star in Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas. He will play the Mayor of Whoville paired with Christine Baranski as his wife Martha. Ron Howard directed film also stars Jim Carrey as the Grinch and Molly Shannon and Bill Irwin as husband and wife Betty and Lou Lou Who.

End Of Days : The Official Site has released trailers for Arnold Schwarzenegger starrer film which is directed by Peter Hyams and also stars Gabriel Byrne, Robin Tunney and Kevin Pollak.

Besieged : Bernardo Bertolucci's new film which is about an African woman (Thandie Newton) fleeing prosecution in her homeland journeys to Rome, where she takes a position as maid to a British musician (David Thewlis) living there. These two very different people soon find themselves starting an unusual romantic relationship.

Get Carter :  Sylvester Stallone has signed to star in a remake of British crime thriller Get Carter. The film is based on the novel Jack's Return Home. Stallone will play tough guy Jack Carter, a mob who goes home for his brother's funeral. The strange circumstances surrounding the death send Carter on a hunt for the killer that pits him against local criminals in a seedy world of porn and gambling and reaches a violent conclusion. 

The Straight Story : Walt Disney Pictures has taken the distribution rights of the new David Lynch movie called The Straight Story. $5 million is said to be paid.The movie will premiere as a competition film at the Cannes International Film Festival.

Box Office Challenge : The Mummy grossed $44.7 million and broke the record for this year's best opening. Sean Connery starrer Entrapment came second with $12.2 million.The Matrix took $6.0 million.

Ace in the Hole : Bruce Willis is in final negotiations to star in Ace in the Hole. The film is about Alex Logan, a brilliant professional con man, fresh out of prison, who is blackmailed into helping a ruthless Las Vegas casino boss evade an FBI murder investigation. No director is attached

The Masque of the Red Death : Alex Proyas (Dark City, The Crow) is set to direct the latest adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's classic story The Masque of the Red Death. Pic centers on a group of nobles felled by the plague despite their taking refuge within a supposedly impregnable palace.

Quills : Michael Caine will join the cast of Quills. The picture which stars Geoffrey Rush, Joaquin Phoenix and Kate Winslet is the story of the final days of the Marquis de Sade. Sade (Rush), confined to an asylum because of his pornographic writings, engages in a battle of wills with a priest (Phoenix) who runs the institution. Winslet plays a maid who is helping to get Sade's pennings to the populace, and Caine will play a doctor who becomes Sade's chief adversary. Philip Kaufman will direct.

Ralph ``Sonny'' Barger : Tony Scott has signed on to develop and direct a film on the Hell's Angels outlaw motorcycle club, based on an unpublished autobiography of Ralph ``Sonny'' Barger Variety's Michael Fleming. Barger was for years the most identifiable figure of the rough and tumble counterculture lifestyle that the Angels symbolized and a lightning rod for controversy, who's simultaneously looking for a publishing deal for his memoirs.

Rated X : Emilio Estevez and Charlie Sheen are teaming for Rated X for fourth time. Pic is about real-life brothers in the porno movie industry. Estevez will direct the film which tells the true story of the Mitchell brothers (Behind the Green Door) who became the kings of porn and destroyed themselves in the process.

Danny DeVito : He will team again with Bette Midler in Drowning Summer which is about the murder of the title character, a small-town matriarch. As the mystery unfolds, it's clear that there is no shortage of suspects. Neve Campbell and Jamie Lee Curtis have also committed to star. He will also direct, produce and star in a boxing road movie, Sugar's Sweet Science of Bruising. He will play an older boxing trainer and fight fixer who befriends a young boxer and takes him on the road, pursued by Vegas mobsters. New Line wants to put the film on a fast track.

15 Minutes : Melina Kanakaredes (Providence) will play the female lead in 15 Minuteswhich stars Robert De Niro and Ed Burns. John Herzfeld will direct the film which Kanakaredes will play a high powered TV investigative reporter who becomes the love interest of De Niro, who plays a decorated cop who teams with a fire marshal (Burns), to track down some crazies who are committing murder in search of their proverbial 15 minutes of fame.
