Star Wars Breaks Another Record : Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace had gone into the record books by taking an estimated $102.7 million for its first five days. The previous record was $95.8 million by The Lost World: Jurassic Park in 1997. George Lucas' film has set several other records since Wednesday, including the biggest regular, nonholiday three-day weekend with an estimated $61.8 million, surpassing Batman Forever which grossed $52.8 million in 1995.

Cannes Film Festival awards : Rosetta, a small, Belgium-made movie won the Palme d'Or at the 52nd Cannes Film Festival Sunday. The French film Humanity took the Grand Jury Prize and two acting prizes.The Actress award is shared between Severine Caneele of Humanity and Emilie Dequenne of Rosetta. Spaniard Pedro Almodovar accepted the best director award for his comic melodrama All About My Mother.It was the festival's biggest popular hit. The screenwriting award went to Russians Yuri Arabov and Marina Koreneva for the movie Moloch while Jury Prize was given to Manoel de Oliveira, the 90-year-old Portuguese director with the movie The Letter.

X-Men : Patrick Stewart is nearing to deal to play Professor X in X-Men for director Bryan Singer.Stewart's character, whose full name is Professor Xavier, leads the X-Men, who are born with mutated genes that impart superpowers. The professor is said to be the planet's most powerful telepath. The film's other villain is Professor X's former best friend Magneto, to be played by Ian McKellen. Shooting begins July 19 in Toronto.

13 Days : Director Roger Donaldson is in final negotiations to direct Cuban Missile Crisis drama 13 Days .Kevin Costner is also attached to play a White House adviser. This is the second time they team for a movie. The first was No Way Out.

Beyond City Limits : Nastassja Kinski, Alyson Hannigan and Jennifer Esposito will star in Beyond City Limits. The director is Gigi Gaston. The movie is about three people outsmarting unsavory men who try to cheat them out of their take in an almost-botched casino heist The project is shooting in Los Angeles.

Episode 2 : The preproduction has already begun on Episode II which begins shooting in June 2000 on locations in Tunisia,Italy and Australia. The film, which will center on the romance and marriage between Anakin Skywalker and Queen Amidala, will be released in summer 2002. George Lucas and producer Rick McCallum will be trying to keep the budget below $100 million. Lucas is currently writing the script, which takes place 10 years after Phantom Menace. He is due to have a finished draft in September, then casting will begin.

Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace : Star Wars earned a reported $28.5 million during its Wednesday debut. As expected Star Wars surpassed the previous record of $26.1 million, set on a Sunday by The Lost World: Jurassic Park during the four-day 1997 Memorial Day weekend Among highest-grossing single-day rankings, Lost World holds the second-, third- and fourth-highest takes with a Sunday gross of $26.1 million, a Saturday gross of $24.4 million and a Friday take of $21.6 million, all during the Memorial Day frame. Yes Lucas, we all say "May The Force Be With You".

Dr. T and the Women : Richard Gere is in negotiations with Robert Altman to play a gynecologist in his next picture Dr. T and the Women sources reports from Cannes Film Festival. No deal has been done yet.

The Replacements : Gene Hackman is near to a deal to join Keanu Reeves in The Replacements according to Variety. The film will be directed by Howie Deutch. Hackman is playing a pro football coach who assembles a team made up of replacement players when the real guys walk out.

Cecilia : Jeremy Irons has signed to star in Cecilia which Irvin Kershner will direct. He will play the role of Giacomo Puccini in this tale of romance between an independent, strong-willed woman who is almost destroyed by her passion for opera and Puccini. Shooting will begin in October in Italy.

Silence of the Lambs Sequel : Michael Fleming reports that Jonathan Demme will not direct the sequel to Silence of the Lambs. Anthony Hopkins will revive his role as Hannibal Lecter.The pic will be adapted from Thomas Harris’s new novel Hannibal. Jodie Foster's decision for reviving his role not known until she returns from the Malaysian shoot of the Anna and the King.

Mystery Men : The Official Site has released the trailer for this Ben Stiller, William H. Macy, Hank Azaria and Greg Kinnear starrer film.

White Jazz : Nick Nolte may next be seen in White Jazz after getting his second Oscar nomination for his role in Affliction The film is the adaptation of the James Ellroy novel which Nolte’s Kingsgate Films has been developing as a star vehicle for the actor. Nolte, will play the lead who is a corrupt cop who gets set up while investigating a police-sanctioned crime family.
