Cold Mountain : According to Hollywood Reporter Tom Cruise, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt and other A-lister actors want to play the lead role in Anthony Minghella's latest project Cold Mountain. Damon starred in Minghella's latest film The Talented Mr. Ripley. Pic is a Civil War drama that focuses on a wounded Confederate soldier who gets up from his hospital bed and begins walking home. The project is being written by Minghella. Hannibal : After Jonathan Demme left the project a few weeks ago (because the material was too violent and wanted to make changes), now producer Dino De Laurentiis is in final negotiations to deal with Ridley Scott to direct Hannibal, the sequel to Silence of the Lambs. There is no name for the screenwriter yet. Jumanji 2 : Ken Ralston will direct the sequel to 1995's Jumanji which starred Robin Williams. The film was about an ancient magical board game that came to life and wreaked havoc that could only be stopped by finishing the game. This will be Ralston's directorial debut who won visual effects Oscar five times. No deals made for casting yet.
Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace : Lucasfilm and Fox confirmed the names of four theaters that will screen the filmless, digital version of Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace. The pic will be shown in Southern California on June 18 at AMC's Burbank 14 and Pacific Theatres' Winnetka Stadium 20 in Chatsworth and in New Jersey at two Loews Cineplex theaters. CineComm Digital Cinema and Texas Instruments' Digital Light Processing will beam the film to the screen at one theater on each coast. CineComm's system will screen at the Winnetka and at Loews' Route 4 Paramus theater in New Jersey, while the Texas Instruments technology will be on display in Burbank and at Loews' Meadows 6 theater in New Jersey. You Can Count on Me : Laura Linney ( The Truman Show) will star opposite Matthew Broderick in in You Can Count on Me. Linney will play a mother struggling to raise her child while fending off an overbearing boss. Kenneth Lonergan (Analyze This screenwriter) will make directorial debut. The film's executer producer is Martin Scorcese. We're taking a very aggressive stance and working with the FBI and the MPAA to go after anybody who has put or intends to put our film on the Web, Lucasfilm spokeswoman Lynne Hale said, noting that the copies brought to Lucasfilm's attention thus far have been of very poor quality. While that may be true, particularly in the case of bootlegs obtained by sneaking a camera into a movie theater, some observers claim to enjoy downloaded dupes with crisp imagery and pristine digital sound. Also the film earned $64.8 million during the four-day Memorial Day weekend, bringing the film's 13-day total to a stunning $205 million. The film beats the previous record set by Independence Day. by eight days. Phantom's four-day cume is second-best on the holiday, behind The Lost World: Jurassic Park, but Lost World opened Friday of Memorial Day weekend 1997 while Phantom was in release nine days before this year's holiday. Benny Lynch : Robert Carlyle (Transpotting) will star in the Scottish biopic Benny Lynch which his four film teammate Antonia Bird directs. The pic is based on the true story of a Scottish boxer (Carlyle) in the 1930s who hit the skids after becoming world champion. Where the Heart Is : Ashley Judd (Heat, Kiss The Girls) will star in Where the Heart Is which Natalie Portman is in the lead. The film will be directorial debut of Matt Williams. Judd will play the best friend of Portman. In the pic Portman will play the role of a pregnant 17-year-old who plans to travel cross-country to California with her boyfriend, but is abandoned by him in an Oklahoma Wal-Mart and makes the store her home. Mars : Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix) has joined the cast of sci-fi film Mars to star beside Val Kilmer. In the pic she plays a pilot who stays on the ship while an astronaut (Kilmer) leads a crew on the first manned mission to the red planet. After they are stranded, she's forced to decide whether to follow orders and return to Earth, or disobey them and engage in a death-defying rescue. Antony Hoffman will make his feature debut.
