New James Bond : The Times of London reports Liam Neeson has been asked to play James Bond in Sony's series of Bond films, assuming Entertainment ASYLUMSony wins its court battle for the Bond rights. The Times said Neeson was interested, and that Sean Connery might actually consent to play Ernst Stavro Blofeld, Bond's archnemesis, whom Connery himself killed several times during his own Bond days. MGM and Sony have duelled over the Bond rights for some time; one likely resolution is that both companies may have the rights to do sequels to Thunderball, the Connery film that introduced Blofeld.

The Bachelor : Brooke Shields has landed a role in The Bachelor. Shields will play a former debutante and ex-girlfriend to Chris O'Donnell, a bachelor who has 24 hours to get married and collect $100 million. She joins a cast including Renee Zellweger, James Cromwell, Marley Shelton, Stacy Edwards and Sarah Silverman.

Bicentennial Man : Bicentennial Man, the pic that was delayed is back on track for a February start. The project that Robin Williams starring and Chris Columbus directing is an Isaac Asimov story.

Monsters Ball : Sean Penn is negotiations to direct prison drama Monsters Ball . The actor has warmed to Ball, the psychological journey of a prison guard working on Death Row. Penn may also co-star in the film, although nothing has been decided.

Windtalkers : United Artists has picked up John Rice and Joe Batteer’s WWII action/drama pitch Windtalkers to develop as a directing vehicle for John Woo. The pic is a story of an Anglo GI assigned to protect a Navajo whose inscrutable native language is used as code in radio transmissions to confound the Japanese.

Autumn in New York : Winona Ryder is in talks to join Richard Gere in romantic drama Autumn in New York. The pic is about a New York playboy and owner of one of Manhattan's swank restaurants, a man approaching 50, who falls in love with a dying woman half his age.

Girl, Interrupted : Whoopi Goldberg is in serious talks to join Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie in Girl, Interrupted. James Mangold (Copland, Fat) will direct the pic which is based on Susanna Kaysen's novel about her experiences as a teenager in a mental asylum in the late 1960s. Goldberg is expected to play Valerie, a nurse in the hospital.

Pluto Nash : Castle Rock Entertainment has signed Ron Underwood (Mighty Joe Young) to direct Eddie Murphy in Pluto Nash, a comedy set on the moon in 2087.

 Obituary : Alan J. Pakula, who produced or directed some of Alan J. Pakula (1928-1998)Hollywood's most successful films over the past four decades including To Kill a Mockingbird, Klute, All the President's Men and Sophie's Choice, was killed Thursday in an auto accident, sources said. We, movie fans, will never forget him. He will always live in our hearts. He was 70. Pakula was driving on the Long Island Expressway in New York when a metal pipe was kicked up by another car and crashed through the windshield, striking him in the head, said Suffolk County Police spokesman Officer Santo DiStefano. Pakula lost control of his 1995 Volvo, which veered off the road and crashed into a fence, the officer said. He was taken to North Shore Hospital in Plainview, where he was pronounced dead, DiStefano said.

A Star Is Born : Will Smith is in talks to star in a remake of A Star Is Born for Warner Bros., with the studio seeking to pair him with a major female singing star and add a new twist on the tale.Pic is about a male star who discovers and falls in love with a young woman whose fame begins to eclipse his. The new version features a gender role reversal,with Smith as the young unknown who falls in love with a femme superstar.

Memoirs of a Geisha : After weeks of speculation, Steven Spielberg has decided to delay for a year the start of Columbia Pictures' Memoirs of a Geisha, with shooting likely to take place early in 2000. He is veering toward making a Tom Cruise vehicle his next film. Minority Report, based on a story by Philip K. Dick about a top policeman in the future who is forced to go on the run. Sources said Spielberg was veering toward Minority Report, though the sources also noted that the screenplay needs some work. Shooting on the Cruise-Spielberg film would probably start in late summer.

Kevin Spacey : Fine Line Features has signed Kevin Spacey and his Trigger Street Prods. to a two-year, first-look production deal. The hope is to generate several films that Spacey will act in, produce and possibly direct. In addition to starring and producing films, the Fine Line deal might give Spacey another chance to direct. He’s been waiting for that opportunity since making his directorial debut with Albino Alligator.

The Hollow Man : Jennifer Lopez is in talks to join the cast of thriller The Hollow Man, directed by Paul Verhoeven. Hollow tells the story of a group of scientists who discover a way to make people invisible. Lopez is expected to play a team scientist and former lover of the group's megalomaniacal leader. No other cast members have been set.

Moby Buck : Dan Aykroyd will star in indie comedy Moby Buck, the feature directorial debut of Victor Pisano. Moby Buck is the story of a hunt for a mythical seven-point buck.

In Too Deep : Pam Grier has joined the cast of In Too Deep,a crime thriller starring Omar Epps, LL Cool J and Stanley Tucci. Based on a true story of an undercover cop who infiltrates a drug ring and gets lost in a violent underworld, the film began shooting this month in Toronto.

Runaway Bride : Chris Meloni (Bound), has landed the coveted role of Julia Roberts' fiance in Paramount Pictures' Runaway Bride, also starring Richard Gere. The Garry Marshall-directed feature is the story of a marriage-phobic woman (Roberts) who has thrice bolted the altar. Meloni plays her latest fiance, a sports enthusiast who believes she can reach her wedding goal through visualization.
