Receivers

DVD with its' full hardware support of the new AC-3 or 5.1 Dolby Digital means to fully enjoy the full potential of this new sound format, you are going to have to invest in a new receiver.

The Simplest way to do this, is to purchase an AC-3/ 5.1 Dolby Digital receiver and just hook it up to any DVD player. This however is not the only option, but in the long run probably the best.

The other option is to purchase an AC-3 Ready receiver. These are cheaper, but you should be aware of what this involves. First of all, in order to take advantage of this, you need to purchase a DVD player with a built in AC-3 decoder (not all players have them, and they are very often more expensive). You will be able to recognize them by the 6 RCA jacks for audio output on the back.

What you should consider if planning to purchase an AC-3 ready receiver is how many AC-3 components that you can hook-up to it. You are going to have to run 6 cables from the DVD player to the receiver, as well as 6 cables for any additional component with AC-3 (if the receiver allows for more than one component). Remember as AC-3 becomes more popular, more electronic equipment is going to need an AC-3 receiver. You may also want to take into account that with an AC-3 ready receiver, it is going to mean a lot of cabling now, and even more down the road.
