The History
The Phone cards of the 1980's usually had a chip or a magnetic strip that held all the information needed to use the card. One major problem was finding a phone that was compatible with the chip or strip so the cardholder could actually use the card. If you had a phone card from one Bell company you couldn't use it on another Bell company;s pay phone. It sounds pretty stupid but it is true.
It wasn't until 1994 when AT&T issued their first public remote information card. These cards became known as Telecards. This enabled AT&T cards to be used on ANY payphone whether AT&T owned it or not.

How It Works
The Telecard works very simply. When you receive the card take a look at the back. On the back of each card is an 800 phone number. This is the telephone number that you call when making a phone call. You call the 800 number and enter an authorization code or a PIN which is yours exclusively. This is the number to enter at the prompt. You then simply dial your long distance phone number, 1-***-***-****, and then speak to your party for only $.19 a minute.
The Telecard you receive is a Zero-based Rechargeable phone card. The first time you call the 800 number you "charge" the phone card using a major credit card for a minimum of $25 dollars which gets you over 100 minutes of long distance phone use anywhere in the United States including Alaska and Hawaii!!

How Does It Affect Your Phone Bill?
It doesn't. Plain and simple. There are no long distance companies for you to change. There is no extra charge on your phone bill. The amount you charge the telecard up to appears on your monthly credit card statement. One small payment and that's it until you need to recharge your card.
Yes, you can recharge your card so don't throw it away! By recharging your card you are able to keep the same card with the same great savings! It is a great way for you to save money especially during the holidays, business trips, vacations, and on special occasions that require that long distance phone call!
