Double Jeopardy

I originally saw this preview at the premiere of The Runaway Bride. The audience heard the lines, "When you get out of here, you can kill him. And they can't do a thing." The whole audience "oooooohed" and with good reason. This a very interesting plot. I must admit that I wasn't sure if I wanted to see it because I've never been a huge fan of Ashley Judd. But after seeing the movie I thought she was well cast for this role. The movie's beginning is a tad slow because the audience all knows the plot: Young, innocent wife is framed for her husband's murder by her best friend and her husband of all people. So the audience painfully waits for the real story to begin since they basically know all of what's going on, while naive Ashley Judd sits there and kisses her husband and then hugs her best friend. Haha, then it begins. And what mainstream movie couldn't be a success without some gratuitous sex. That's right, let's flaunt Ashley's chest and rear all over the screen for no apparent reason. But then it really begins and the movie is basically uphill from there. Tommy Lee Jones was magnificent, as usual. Ashely Judd doubled well as the caring mother and the scorned wife, hell bent on revenge. I won't go into details if you haven't seen it, but I was paticularly fond of the auction scene. She did a good job of appearing calm and collected under such circumstances. I was torn though between some of the things she did. Many of them were logical but some seemed ridiculous. Ok, if your car is blocked in by a man chasing you, do you A. Leave your car and run? B. Sit there and cry like a baby? or C. Slam it in reverse and smash the car. That's right, I'll take C. Ok, let's try another. When a man who's been chasing you is in the next room and is about to walk into the room you're in, do you A. Continue playing on the computer (even though you can look up the info you need elsewhere)? B. Cry like a baby and pray he doesn't come in. C. Wet your pants. or D. Run like hell and take a back door or window to escape? Most of you hopefully picked D. But no, what does Ashley do? A. Why, I dunno. Beyond those few scenes where you go, "Yeah right", the movie really isn't bad. There is enough comic relief the keep the movie well balanced between suspense and action. The plot is creative and new, which is always nice. There are a few silly scenes and a super quick resolution. But I still say this movie is highly enjoyable and it's one of the better movies I've seen in the last month. |
