Clair worked as a servant in the garden district of New
Orleans. Her employer was a prominent businessman. He dismissed her from
service when he discovered she had been sneaking away from the house to
meet with a voodoo priestess in the Quarter. Her employer had given her a
small severance and a train ticket away from his family and New
Orleans. As she sat in the depot she picked up a discarded newspaper. In
bold type it read The Clarion, there was an advertisement on the back
page for a chamber maid at a hotel in the small town of Four Corners. Her
mind was made up,she tucked the paper under her arm and exchanged her
ticket for the nearest town to Four Corners. |
