Part Four

As the dust settled, Qui-Gon could make out Obi-Wan's figure among the rubble. Luckily the palace was only one story high, but it was about a kilometre in diameter, this was the safest way to build it because then if a bomb went off it would only ruin a part of the palace.

"Obi-Wan, can you hear me?" Qui-Gon called as he freed himself of the rubble. He only had a few minor cuts and bruises, but his apprentice wasn't as fortunate.

Obi-Wan remained where he was, Qui-Gon could sense he was still alive, but was badly hurt. Qui-Gon made his way to his padawan, knelt beside him, and started digging him out.

"You're going to be alright Obi-Wan. Don't worry." Qui-Gon said calmly trying to reassure himself more than the unconscious boy.

Just then he remembered that Jallist had been in their kitchen. He looked down at Obi-Wan, and knew his padawan would be alright if he was left alone for a few minutes, so he made his way to the kitchen. Above him was a few beams and panels, but he could see the sky that night was overtaking.

Once he was near the kitchen, or what used to be the kitchen, he called out, "Jallist, are you alright?"

"I'm okay, I just have a few cuts." The medium height, reddish brown haired girl answered as she came into Qui-Gon's view. He observed that she was shaking slightly.

"Could I get your help?" Qui-Gon asked.

"I am here to serve you Master Jinn." Jallist replied almost methodically.

"But the circumstances have changed, this is not part of your responsibility." Qui-Gon told her.

"As long as you are here to protect the princess, I will be here to serve you in anyway I can." Jallist explained, but before Qui-Gon could object, she added, "I insist, and I really don't mind. After all it's not everyday I get to serve Jedi."

"It's not everyday we are served in this fashion." Qui-Gon responded. Then he led Jallist to where Obi-Wan lay. They both knelt down, and started removing the remainder of the rubble very carefully. Once Obi-Wan was free of the weight, Qui-Gon examined him through the Force for any sign of broken bones. Much to his dismay, his padawan's collarbone was broken.

/We have to get that put in place right away, we don't want it to start healing like that. / Qui-Gon thought.

"We have to get him to the medical infirmary." Jallist said voicing Qui-Gon's thoughts.

"I got him." Qui-Gon responded and picked up his padawan's unconscious body very carefully. They made their way towards the direction of the medical infirmary. Luckily there was a hole in the wall leading to the hallway that was large enough for them to fit through. Once they were in the hallway, they noticed the palace security hurrying towards them.

"What happened?" asked a man who Qui-Gon assumed was the chief of security by is uniform.

"Another bomb. We were the only ones in the room when it went off." Jallist replied simply. Everybody knew it was the 'Kriffs' who had planted it. Then she added, "We need to get the younger Jedi to the infirmary."

"Alright, go ahead." The chief agreed then motioned for his officers to come forward. As Jallist and Qui-Gon, who was carrying Obi-Wan, were walking away they heard the chief giving instructions. "Start sealing up the room so nobody can enter it, then find out where the bomb was when it went off." That was all they heard before they were out of earshot.

Once they arrived at the infirmary, a healer came up to them. "May I help you?" the healer asked.

"I am hoping so. My apprentice was knocked unconscious, and his collarbone is broken." Qui-Gon explained.

"Bring him in here." The healer said, leading the way to a small room with a medical bed and a few chairs in it. It was identical to the one that Qui-Gon had been on earlier that day.

/Funny how time passed so slowly, it seemed like that was a few days ago already. / Qui-Gon thought.

He gently laid his padawan down on the bed, then stood back so the healer could examine him. The healer looked at Obi-Wan's collar bone, then said, "I'll place his collarbone right away, and then get someone else to take a look at his head. After that I'm afraid he will have to just relax and heal."

"Don't you have a Bacta tank?" Qui-Gon asked.

"No we don't have enough funds to buy one, we are too busy fixing whatever part of the palace is blown up by another bomb." The healer replied.

"There are that many bombs?" Qui-Gon asked obviously surprised.

"You'd be surprised." Was all the healer answered. "Now, lets get this boy back in shape."

"I'll wait in the hallway." Jallist said, and hurried out of the room.

Qui-Gon laid his hand on Obi-Wan's leg, sending soothing thoughts, but blocking Obi-Wan from his mind at the same time so he wouldn't feel the pain himself, as the bone was put in place. As the healer placed Obi-Wan's collarbone, Qui-Gon stood out of the way with his eyes closed, concentrating on dulling his padawan's pain, and sending calming and supportive thoughts. But even through his concentration he felt his padawan jerk under his hand in pain, at the same time letting out a whimper.

"It's set." The healer said, as Qui-Gon opened his eyes. "We will form a mould to hold his collarbone in place, but in the meantime, I'll take a look at his other injuries." Qui-Gon nodded his head, then left the room in search of Jallist, he found her sitting on the floor outside the infirmaries door.

"His collarbone is set, now the healer is checking his other injuries. You can come in and sit with us if you want." Qui-Gon offered as he crouched down next to her.

"Thank you Master Jinn, I would like that." She replied, then they both stood up and entered the medical infirmary. The two sat in chairs next to Obi-Wan's bed. The healer was disinfecting and wrapping cuts.

"We should have a healer look at your cuts as well." Qui-Gon said.

"Maybe later, but Obi-Wan must come first, his injuries are more serious, then you must be checked Master Jinn." Jallist replied.

"I'm fine, I am not in need of a healer." Qui-Gon answered.

"Look at that cut on your leg, of course you need to be looked at." Jallist said pointing to a cut that showed through a tear in Qui-Gon's pant leg.

"Perhaps you are right, but I insist that you go first." Qui-Gon gave in.

"As you wish Master Jinn." Jallist responded with a grin. Just then another healer came in and began examining Obi-Wan's head. After a short while, the healer went over to Qui-Gon.

"How bad is he?" Qui-Gon asked as he stood up.

"He has a minor concussion, and a large cut on his head. I put some Vemaccu on it, Vemaccu closes open wounds. He will be badly bruised, but I can't tell the total extent of the injuries yet." The healer explained.

"What can you do for him?" Qui-Gon questioned.

"His cuts, and his concussion just need time to heal, but he will have to wear the brace for a few weeks." The healer said.

"What condition will he be in with the help of the brace?" Jallist contributed to the conversation.

"Well I'm afraid he won't be able to do any physical activities for awhile. But I'll have to see how fast he progresses." The healer confessed.

"Thank you for your help. Do you know when his brace will be ready?" Qui-Gon asked.

"It should be ready by now. I'll go check." The healer said, then left. Qui-Gon leaned back in his chair and closed his eyes. He knew he didn't have the energy to use the Force to help speed up Obi-Wan's healing, so he would just have to wait. Without meaning to, Qui-Gon fell into a deep sleep.

Obi-Wan awoke to pain, everywhere. His head hurt the most, but his whole body was screaming at him. "Oh Sith, Sith, Sith, Sith, Sith..." he muttered as the pain set in.

Qui-Gon woke up sensing his padawan's pain. As he opened his eyes, he saw Obi-Wan struggling to sit up. Qui-Gon got to his feet and went to Obi-Wan's bedside. "Are you alright padawan?" he asked with concern.

"I hurt everywhere!" Obi-Wan confessed weakly. v "Lay down, you have a concussion, and a broken collarbone." Qui-Gon ordered, then asked, "What is the last thing you remember?"

"We were in our quarters... there was an explosion, the walls were falling apart, I looked up and a large piece of metal was coming at me. That's all I remember." Obi-Wan replied as he slowly laid back down.

"At least you never lost your memory." Qui-Gon said. Just then a healer walked in holding a brace.

"What is that?" Obi-Wan asked.

"Oh you're up. How are you feeling?" the healer asked, not answering the question.

"I feel like a bantha sat on me." Obi-Wan answered grumpily, then asked, "But what is that?"

"This is your brace for your collarbone." The healer answered.

"I have to wear THAT???" Obi-Wan demanded.

"It's to hold your collarbone in place." The healer explained.

"Why don't you just put me in a Bacta tank?" Obi-Wan asked.

"They don't have them here padawan." Qui-Gon interjected. "It's only for a few weeks though."

"A few WEEKS?!" Obi-Wan complained loudly.v "Padawan..." Qui-Gon said warningly. Obi-Wan immediately shut his mouth, he knew his Master was serious when he used that tone.

"Let's get this on you so you can sit up." The healer said as she walked over to Obi-Wan. She took off his tunic carefully, then started fastening the clasps to hold it on. Finally it was in place. Obi-Wan put his tunic back on. He was thankful that his Master and him had put on the customary Jedi attire before supper the previous day. It was now late in the morning the day after the explosion.

"I'll come and check on you later." The healer said as she walked out of the room. At the same time Jallist walked in holding a tray with three breakfasts on it. She set the tray down on the table next to Obi-Wan's bed. Then she handed one plate to Qui-Gon, and took hers off. She then put the tray on Obi-Wan's lap with his plate on it.

"Today's meal includes Mayna bird eggs, Nogarian wheat toast, and a choice of drinks. Name your poison." Jallist rattled off to the two Jedi with a grin.

"Just water for me please." Obi-Wan said.

"Thank you for breakfast, and I've heard about how great the coffee is here on Noga, do you have any of that?" Qui-Gon asked.

"Of course Master Jinn, we wouldn't be very loyal to Noga if we didn't serve our famous coffee to our guests. So one coffee, and one water coming up." Jallist said grinning, then she hurried from the room.

Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon started their breakfast in a comfortable silence. Jallist returned with their drinks and a juice for her, then sat down and ate her own meal.

After they were finished, the two Jedi thanked Jallist for the meal, and then she took the dishes away.

"Oh Sith..." Obi-wan said not meaning to have said it out loud.

"Watch your mouth padawan." Qui-Gon warned. "What's wrong?" he added after seeing his apprentice's face scrunched up in pain.

"Yes Master, but every now and then I get a sharp pain in my head." Obi-Wan explained.

"That would be because you have a concussion." Qui-Gon told his apprentice. "Just relax, it will go away soon."

Obi-Wan laid back down, and closed his eyes. He accepted the pain, and began to use a healing technique to speed up his recovery, or at least dull the pain. Qui-Gon sat back down in his chair again, and meditated. Jallist entered the room after awhile, and sat down quietly. She noticed that the two Jedi had their eyes closed, and decided it was best not to disturb them.

Qui-Gon ended his meditation shortly after he sensed another presence in the room. "Hello." Qui-Gon said, acknowledging Jallist.

"I found out that the princess is alright, and she wishes to meet with you two later this evening if you are available." She told Qui-Gon.

"I don't think Obi-Wan will be allowed to move for a few days, but I will meet with her." Qui-Gon replied.

"Alright, I will have someone inform the princess. She wishes to have the meeting shortly after the evening meal in the conference room." Jallist said.

"Thank you." Qui-Gon replied.

That afternoon Obi-Wan rested and whenever he was awake, he was meditating, just as Qui-Gon had been doing the whole time. Jallist had left them to attend to her duties, and so she wouldn't disturb them. At dinner Jallist brought in three plates with Dilog meat stew on them. The three ate heartily, and once they were done, Jallist returned the dishes to the kitchen.

"I wish I could go with you tonight Master." Obi-Wan commented.

"You just concentrate on healing, padawan." Qui-Gon instructed. "I'll be able to handle the meeting alright."

"May the Force be with you during it Master." Obi-Wan replied.

"And may it be with you my young padawan." Qui-Gon said.

Jallist entered the room and said, "Master Jinn, I'll take you to see Princess Desmona now."

"Alright, thank you." Qui-Gon replied, then followed Jallist out of the medical infirmary, and down many luxurious hallways. They stopped at a set of large double doors.

"I'll go tell her you're here." Jallist said, and slipped into the room. "Your highness, Master Qui-Gon Jinn is here at your request." Jallist formally told her.

"Show him in." the princess instructed. Jallist went back out of the room.

"She will see you now." Jallist said.

Qui-Gon put up the hood of his cloak, then strode into the room. He saw a long table with the princess sitting at the middle in an elegant dress, and a tiara in her short golden hair. She was a lady of about 20 he had heard, with grey toned skin. Across the table, and to her left was a man that Qui-Gon recognised to be the Chief of security.

Qui-Gon bowed, then said, "Princess Desmona."

"Ah, so you are Master Qui-Gon Jinn. It is a pleasure to meet you at last." She said smiling.

"I regret that we have not been able to meet with you sooner." Qui-Gon said.

"Please sit down." She instructed gesturing to the chair across and to the right of her, then asked, "It is too bad your apprentice couldn't join us, how is he feeling?"

As Qui-Gon sat down, and lowered his hood, he was glad she had been informed Obi-Wan couldn't come, and that he was injured in the explosion. "He is feeling better, but will be unable to do anything for a few days." He told her.

"Please give him my regards." She replied. "I am very sorry at how much trouble you have had since you first arrived on Noga."

"The fault is not yours, I have gained much knowledge of your situation because of it." Qui-Gon insisted.

"Yes, our situation... Chief Mettar, have you discovered where the bomb was when it went off?" the princess asked.

"Yes your highness, we found out that it was on the outside of the palace, by the Jedi's bedroom wall." The Chief reported.

So the bomb was most likely intended for the Jedi." She pointed out.

"Your highness, for your protection I believe it is best if you move into a bedroom closer to the centre of the palace, away from the outside walls." The chief suggested.

"That would be wise your highness." Qui-Gon commented.

"Alright, I will have someone move my things immediately." She said.

"Also, I think the Jedi should have their quarters across from yours for your safety." The chief replied.

"Master Jinn, does this arrangement suit you alright?" the princess asked.

"It would be for the best, if you agree with this your highness." Qui-Gon answered.

"I believe it would be for the best as well, so we will move you and your apprentice in immediately as well." She told Qui-Gon. "Let us end this meeting for tonight, and settle into our new quarters. We will arrange for another meeting on another night." The princess told them, then added, "Goodnight Chief Mettar, Master Jinn." They bowed as she left the room. Two guards escorted her safely away to her destination. Qui-Gon and the Chief of security went their separate ways. Qui-Gon headed for the medical infirmary. When he arrived, he talked to one of the healers.

"Is Obi-Wan well enough to be moved to our quarters?" the Jedi asked.

"He can be moved but he must not walk around unassisted for a few days due to his concussion." The healer said. "And he must get plenty of rest so he can heal."

"Alright, I'll take him to our quarters right away." Qui-Gon agreed. Qui-Gon walked into Obi-Wan's room and found the boy sitting up waiting eagerly for his Master's return.

"How did it go?" Obi-Wan asked.

"It went well. It was short, but they found the bomb outside, by our bedroom wall. Also we are moving into quarters across from the princesses, located in the middle of the palace." Qui-Gon reported.

"I get to leave the infirmary?" Obi-Wan asked excitedly.

"Yes, right now if you want to." Qui-Gon told him with a slight grin.

"YES!" Obi-Wan half shouted.

"But first, you have a few rules to follow." Qui-Gon said.

"Rules?" Obi-Wan asked, wondering what his Master meant.

"Yes, you have to stay in our quarters and are not allowed to walk anywhere unassisted for a few days because of your concussion, and you must rest." Qui-Gon answered emphasising the last word.

"I can't walk by myself?" Obi-Wan asked obviously surprised.

"No, you don't want to faint if you have a dizzy spell do you? It's the healer's orders anyway." Qui-Gon said.

"Okay, but can we go now?" Obi-Wan wanted to know.

"Yes we can go." Qui-Gon told him, as he helped his apprentice to his feet. Obi-Wan had to get his Master to help him with his cloak though, because it was hard for him to reach around his back and grab it. Once it was on, Qui-Gon took hold of his padawan's arm, and they left the room. As they were leaving, they found Jallist in the waiting room.

"I'm supposed to take the two of you to your quarters." She told them, leading the way.

Jallist showed them to their quarters, which were a little smaller than their previous one. There was no kitchen, just counters and a table in one corner of their main room. They had their own rooms though, and there was a refresher that joined them. There were rich looking couches and matching chairs in the main room. It looked cosy for such elegant quarters.

Qui-Gon helped Obi-Wan to a couch, then walked back to the door where Jallist was standing. "Master Jinn, the healer told me that Obi-Wan will need help getting around, and I know that you will need to be meeting with people, so if you want me to come and stay with him at anytime I will." Jallist offered.

"That is very kind of you, and it would be much appreciated." Qui-Gon said.

"I wouldn't mind, so don't hesitate to call me when you want or have to go out." Jallist said as she left.

Qui-Gon then walked to the kitchenette and made some tea; once it was done he brought the two cups to the couch, and handed one to Obi-Wan.

"Here, drink this, then you have to get some sleep." Qui-Gon insisted.

"Thank you, and yes Master." Obi-Wan agreed, they hadn't had quiet past couple of days after all.

Qui-Gon read for awhile in the main room after Obi-Wan had gone to bed. While he was reading, he heard the comm. system buzz, so he hurried over and answered it. "Yes?" he asked.

"Master Jinn, I'm sorry to disturb you, but the sensor alarm went off, and someone reported a masked person running from the palace..." the Chief of security started explaining.

"I'll be right there." Qui-Gon interrupted, then ended the communication. He knew they all suspected another bomb had been planted, and if it was, it could go off at anytime.
