Gala and Beyond

It was their final night on Gala. Qui-Gon went into his Padawan’s room. The youngster was seated cross-legged on his bed. In his pajamas, he looked much younger than his thirteen years.

“Hi, Master.”

Qui-Gon smiled indulgently. “Hello Padawan. I came in to bid you a good evening. I think you should get some sleep now. We’ll be leaving early tomorrow for Melida/Daan.”

Obi-Wan smiled back at him. “Isn’t this the most grandest bed you’ve ever seen?” he asked, as Qui-Gon pulled back the covers and he climbed under them.

“Most grandest? Padawan, I think we need to work on your grammar skills,” Qui-Gon said, still smiling.

Obi-Wan flashed a grin at his Master as the elder Jedi pulled the covers over him. “But isn’t it?”

“I suppose it does rank among the finest,” he admitted, seating himself on the edge of the bed. “But you’re stalling. Go. To. Sleep.”

“Master, can I ask you something?” he asked, sleepily.

“Of course, Padawan, you may ask me anything.”

“What were you thinking when you rode into town with Elan on the swoops?”

Qui-Gon smiled faintly. “At first I was afraid that I might have left you with too much to handle, but when I discovered that you were more than capable of taking care of things, I was very pleased with your skills.”

Obi-Wan blinked and smiled sleepily up at his Master. “Good,” he murmured as he drifted off.

Qui-Gon chuckled softly. He brushed his hand over the top of Obi-Wan’s short hair. “Sleep well, my Padawan.”
