Summary

The episode opens with a group of men in flax jackets with guns storming a house. There's a barrier set up, to prevent the onlookers from getting to close, but a woman brushes past it and all the onlookers. Men restrain her from getting very far, but she gets hysterical, saying that it's her house. The men in flax jackets break down the door with a battering ram, and a few of them enter the house. They search the house, finally reaching a room with what they're loking for- but it's apparntly not what they expected. "What the hell..." says one of the men. The woman outside hears this through the walkie-talkie, and of course this doesn't help to console her. Back in the room, you see a man-her husband-huddeled in a fetal position in the corner, wearing only his underwear, and covered in what looks like a rash-although it could be blood.
Scully's at a bar, looking through some reports. Mulder comes in, and offers to buy her a drink, but she declines, she doesn't want to drink on the job. Apparently, she was waiting for him, she says that she got his message. They get a table, and Mulder tells her about Col. Buddahaus, a man who disapeared from his home in Idaho four months ago. He says that his wife reported him kipnapped. Col. Bubbahaus wasn't the first one, either-six pilots have gone missing since '63, and all of them flew experimental aircraft. Scully says that there have been rumors of soliders flying experimental aircraft being shot down over Russian airspace, that this case is really not very unique. Mulder says that he's been tracking this cse for a while now, and that it's been deproiretized-someone doesn't want it investigated. He tells Scully that they're going to Idaho tomorrow. She asks him why he's intersted in it, as it's not paranormal in nature; she thought he was only interestd in X-Files. He relpies simply that it has a 'paranormal bouquet' about it, before going to the mens room. In the washroom, he's washing his hans when he see's someone in the mirror behind him. The man tells him not to persue this case, to leave it alone. When Mulder asks who he is, he says that that isn't inportant, but that he has a certain interest in his work, and that he is putting himself at great risk simply by being there. He seemly dispaears, and Mulder is left looking around for him, and very confused. Scully comes up to him, and asks him if he's okay. Later on, Scully is looking at some microfiche about stealth weaponry. She calls Mulder up, and chews him out, saying that there's a lot he didn't tell her about this chase, that it's just a UFO wild goose chase. Mulder hears clicks over the phone, and sees a van outside of his window. He tells Scully that he doesn't want to talk about it on this line, they can talk about it on the plane tomorrow. They're in Idaho now, knocking on someones door. Suddenly a low-flying plane flies over, and Mulde tries to get a closer look at it. A women opens the door then, and lets them in. Shes tells them that she first noticed the change in Bob's behavior two years ago, when he got yhis rash. His personality became unpredeictable, he began doing odd things like spinkling fish food on his food at a dinner party. He started yelling at his kids, and would shake like he was having a seizure. She says that henever discussed his work, he wa very loyal that way. She only knew that it was extremely top-secret. The government won't tell her what happened to him or where he is, and she doesn't care, she just wants him back. Mulder asks her if she knows of this happening to anyone else. this way. She says that yes, Vernon Macleans' husband went crazy and dispeared, but 'it's not like he didn't come back'.Mulder and Scully go over to the Maclean's house, to talk to him. He's sitting outside, pulling out one hair at a time from his head. Vernon says that she's just thankful he was returned to her, and that they've recieved wonderful care and treatment. Scully says that stereotopy, which is caused by extreme stress might be responsible for this man's behavior, that they can't take the phsyical stress of flying these experimental aircrafts. She asks him if he's heard of the Aurora project, her theory being that these men are washouts from it. But, as Mulder points out, Budahaus had presidential comendation, he was certinately no 'washout'. Back in their motel, Mulder has been on hold for 45 minutes, but Scully says that she's gotten an appointment withKissel on Friday. Mulde has heard this name before, and soon they're on their way to Kissels house. He's outside, and has nothing to say. He tells them to get the hell of his property, then goes inside and slams the door. A reporter comes up to question them, says that there are a lot of UFO nuts looking around here. He himself has never seen one, and doesn't believe in them. Mulder and Scully go to a cafe the reporter told them about-The Flying Saucer. A plane flies over, and a women working there says that all the pilots think they're big hotshots. Mulder asks her who took all the pictures of UFO's behind the counter, and sher says that she took the one on the end while she was taking out the garbage. Mulder buys a limited edition print for $5, and Scully leans over and whispers "Sucker" They leave the cafe and get in the car, Scully says that Eleens Air Force Base isn't on her (Government-issue) map, But Mulder knows, and he has his own map. They drive past signs saying that they re now entering a restricted area, but naturally this doesn't stop them. Mulder stops the car, and taking somthing from the trunk, starts hiking up the embankment. Scully gets out too, and tries to stop him from going, asking him what he thinks he'll see-UFO's? Mulder relies "Maybe nothing" Scully is peeved though, yelling after him that "This is going to look real good on my field report".
Scully's sleeping in the car, when everything starts to shake, then the back windscreen shatters. She awakes with a scream. Mulder comes up and drags her out of the car, insisting that she's 'gotta see this.' They go up the embankment Mulder went up earlier, and Mulder shows her two lights, moving very fast throught hre sky in a very non-mechanical manner. Mulder, of corse says that they're UFO's, but Scully says that it's probably lasers. Another light joins the ones already in the sky, but tis one's a helicopter. Mulder and Scully see a couple of people by the fence, and when thay run of, Mulde and Scully give chase. The people finally surrender, it's just a couple of teenagers. The helicopter's come really close by now, and they all hide from it. Later, at a cafe, Mulder is questioning them about how they got in there, and what they know about it. The kids say that they go there a lot, they get in through a hole in the fence. They tell of a 'yellow base,' a place where they're supposedly hiding a UFO. They say it's surrounded by landmines and bombs, that no-one's ever been there. Outside the restaurant, a man with a walkie-talkie is sitting in his car, watching them. Back in the restaurant, one of the kids is saying that he thinks that the UFO's use Star Trk technology. When Mulder shows him the picture, he says that that is exactly what the UFO's look like. Mulder unloads the kids scooter from his car, and they drive off. Mulder and Scully get in the car, and start argueing. SCully can't believe that Mulder believes everything the kids said, she says that they were really stoned. Mulder shows her a picture of the UFO that crashed at Roswell, and says that Ellens Air Force base was one of the locations to wich pieces of the UFO were shipped. He thinks that the lights they saw the other night were planes made with UFO technology. Of corse, this really sets Scully off, she says that the only proof he has are two blurry pictures, one of them is fifty tears old, and the other one he bought at a roadside diner. And, she says, even if the pictures were real, it still doesn't explain Col. Budahaus. Later on, at their motel, Scully is talking to the receptionist. She leaves the office, and comes back down to where Mulder is, saying that they've gotten a message from Mrs. Budahaus, that her husband was returned to hre last night. They go to see the Budahaus', Mrs.Budahaus answers the door, crying. She insists that the man sitting there isn't her husband. Mulder looks at the picture of him, it matches exactly. He is sitting at a table, working on a model, and he asks who Mulder and Scully are.
Mrs.Buddahaus is still insisting that that man isn't her husabnd, that they've done something to him. Mulder introduces himself to Col.Buddhaus, asking him if he knows where he's been for the past four months. Col.Buddhaus says that he's been the the hospital on the base, when Mulder asks him if he's sure, he says that he thinks so. Mulder then asks him when his birthday is, and what his kids names are. He replies, with the correct answers. (His birthday is 11-21, the 21st of November) He is getting impatient and frusterated with Mulder because he is asking him such easy questions. Mulder then asks him if it is possible to do a certain flying manouver, and he doesn't know. This upsets him, which of course upsets his wife even more. Mulder and Scully leave, and get in the car. Mulder pitches his idea to Scully, that they rewired that man's brain, so he could only remember certain things. Scully, of course, scoffs at his idea, saying that there simply isn't the technology to do that, or for the aircraft either. Mulder says that he's talking about UFO technology here, and Scully laughs. Suddenly, two cars, one on either side of the road appear, forcing them to stop. They are ordered to get out of the car, while it's searched. They hold Mulder and Scully's hands behind their backs, and lead them away. One of the men hit Mulder when he asks what this is all about. They find a camera in the car, and expose all the film to the light, ruining it, and tell Mulder and Scully to go pack thier suitcases and leave now. Back in their motel room, Scully is trying to trck the license plate, and no car is registered for that plate. Mulder says that he thinks that the helicopter was chasing them that night at the base, not the kids, that thay knew they were coming before they did. That they returned Col.Budahaus as a decoy. He tells Scully about his phone being tapped, and about Deep Throats warning. He says that they have a UFO there, that they will go to any lengths to keep it secret. Scully says that they have no case anymore, and should leave while they still have jobs. Mulder leaves the room, saying that he will shower, then pack his suitcase. But Scully hears a car start after he leaves the room, and she chases after it, asking him where he's going. But he doesn't say anything, he just drives off. The stoned kids from earlier are showing Mulder the hole in the fence, and he asks them where the yellow hanger and the spot where they watch the UFO's flying are. They tell him to just follow the path, but to not go past the end of the long weeds. Mulder reaches the end of the long weeds, and starts to go on, but then thinks better of it, and sits down to wait for night to fall. When it's night, he starts off again, and finds a runway, and the hanger. He is standing on the runway when a UFO like the one in the picture flies overhead, and hovers for a few seonds before zooming off at a terific speed. He sees cars driving up then, and runs. He isn't quick enough though, men get out of the cars and surround him, forcing him onto a stretcher in on of the cars before driving off.
The men inject Mulder with something that makes him sleepy, and put an oxygen mask on him. Scully is at the hotel trying to call Washington, but she can't get a line out. When she asks for assistance, she is cut off, so she goes to the hotel office to use their phone, but that isn't working either. Back at the base, the truck with Mulder in it drives into the hanger, and he is unloaded from it. Mulder is groggy, and he only sees fuzzy, brief images of people wearing white, and something behind a screen that looks like a UFO. Heading back to her hotel room, Scully meets a man, and she is talking to him when she hears someone talking on the walkie-talkie in his car. She realizes that he must be with the enemy, and she runs to the car, and locks herself in it. She searches the car for anything of use, and while she is doing this, the man smashes the window, as Scully finds a gun. She holds the gun to his head. It is at that point that the kids drive up on their scooter. Scully asks them if thay know where Mulder is, and they say that they left him at the base last night. Scully tells the man to get his walkie-talkie, and find out where Mulder is at the base. At the base, Mulder is in an operating theater, and a surgeon is putting drops in his eyes. Scully and the man are in his car, at the enterance to the base She tells him to leave the car running, still holding the gun on him. The gate to the base opens, and a car pulls up. Mulder gets out of the car, and slowly walks towards Scully. Scully gets out of the car, and order the man to do the same. She tells Mulder to get in the car, which he only does after looking at the guard to make sure that it's okay. The man says that everything he saw there is equal to the protection that they give it, and Scully pulls away. She asks Mulder if he is okay, he replies that he thinks so. They go to the Budahaus's house, and ask Mrs.Budahaus about her husband, and she says that he is much better, and that he's resting at that moment. Mulder and Scully hear Col.Buddahaus's voice in the background, though, and Mrs.Budahaus hastily shuts the door. Mulder says that they've gotten to her. Scully says that they know nothing, and that they should get out of there as fast as possible. She leaves, leaving Mulder standing on the Budahaus's front door. Scully is typing up her report at the computer, writing that everything is inconclusive, and that the file is closed, pending further investigation. Mulder is running around a track, and has stopped to catch his breath when Deep Throat comes up to him. He says that his life is in danger evertime thay meet, and that he can provide Mulder with information only if it is in *his* best intrests. Mulder tells him that erased his memory, and asks Deep Throat what he saw. He replies, a military UFO? He asks why people,(like Mulder) who belive in the existance of UFO's are not dissuaded by all the evidence to the contrary. Mulder replies that is because all the evidence to the contrary is not entirely dissausive. -"They're here, aren't they?" "Mr.Mulder, *they* have been here for a very long time."

Review

Again, it's somewhat hard for me to write this review in the middle of the forth season, but I'll try my best. It's said that one rewrites the pilot for a television show twice more for the two shows after the pilot, just to make sure that people understand the point of the show. Well, CC did a good job rewriting the pilot for this. The obvious similarites between this and the pilot are that they are both 'mythology' episodes, that is they both focus aliens and the search for the Truth. This episode saw the introduction of an ally for Mulder, Deep Throat. Although he seems not to be at first, I think that he prove to be a great help to Mulder in his search for the Truth. Of course, we have yet to learn what his motivation is for helping Mulder, it must be a strong one if he does, indeed put his life at risk when they meet. We also don't know where he works, at what level of government he is at, or what he does. I assume, of course, that it is a high level he works at, and that he is a powerful person. We don't even know if he is coming to Mulder of his own free will, or if someone, a more powerful someone is controlling him, forcing him to do so. We saw more evolment of Mulder and Scully's relationship in this episode. Scully still thinks Mulder is a nutcase, except she understands why, a little more now, than she did at the beginning of the pilot. She is willing to stick by him though, as shown when she waited in the car while he dashed off looking for UFO's. And she cares a lot about him, enough to kill even, if she believed it would save him. Mulder has let down his defenses some more, though he still doesn't trust her entirely, she has proven to him that she an be trusted. And, I believe, that in time Mulder will come to trust her entirely, and she him.
