You Only Live Twice

(1967) Sean Connery

Sean Connery returned onced again in 1967's You Only Live Twice to reprise thr role that had brought him success and stardom beyond belief. I don't know if this was the best Connery film, but it is definitley mt favourite. It was supposed to be his last performance, but we all know that it wasn't. And it is for that reason that I think I enjoyed it so much! He wanted to leave with a bang and he did a good job, unfortunatley though, not all aspects of the film lived up to his performance!

London Symphony Orchestra play You Only Live Twice (CD)

MI6 has the world believing that 007 has died in Hong Kong. This allows Bond to do his job without the many distractions he had before. SPECTRE is stealing both US and Soviet spacecrafts in an attempt to start World War III, and it's up to Bond to find out not only what's happening, but to stop what's hppening. He doesn't have much time. Behind the scheme is Ernst Stavro Blofeld, SPECTRE's chief agent and soon to be Bond's arch enemy. Donald Pleasence plays Blofeld and does a magnificent job.

Blofeld introduces Himself to Bond

Along the way, Bond Japanese agent/Bond Girl Kissy Suzuki (Mie Hama). He also gets help from an army of Ninjas, who in a display of pure action and excitement, help produce one of the greatest battles in Bond history. Bond finds himself in trouble many times in this film and if it wasn't for Q, who as usual is on top of his work, he would be in it even deeper. Little Nellie is one of the most memorable gadgets in the series. A slower-moving middle section is helped along by Connerys' performance, and when Pleasence introduces his charcter, all tiresome scenes tend to dissapear.

Blofeld explains life to Bond

Simply said, Connery and pleasence ARE this film. If it wasn't for them, You Only Live Twice would have just another low-key action picture, but because these performances in my opinion, came from the heart, this movie will remain a popular one among Bond fans for years to come, and the not-so-good acting from supporting roles here will be forgotten. The other characters don't even come close to Bond and Blofeld. All of the Blofelds to follow in the series don't even come close to Pleasence. All in all, this film is credited with two great peformances, and of course the action that comes with them. It could have been better, but it could have been worse too!
