ADULTERY: is the act of unfaithfulness in marriage that occurs when one of the marriage partners voluntarily engages in sexual intercourse with a person of the opposite sex other than the marriage partner. Old Testemant: Death was the punishment which shows the severity of this sin on the human-divine relationship (Psalm 51:4). New Testament: Jesus emphasized the matters of the heart (Mt: 15:19). However, it can be forgiven as He did to the woman.
FORNICATION: Various acts of sexual immorality, especially being a harlot or whore. Old Testemant: The clearest example is that of Tamar sitting on the roadway to entice Judah (Gen. 38:12-29). Such action was subject to criminal prosecution bringing the death penalty (Gen. 38:24) New Testament The New Testament also condemns prostitution. Jesus went against Jewish tradition and forgave prostitutes and opened the way for them to enter God's kingdom through faith (Matt. 21:31-32,Heb. 11:31).
UNCLEANNESS: Physical or moral impurity
LASCIVIOUSNESS: KJV term for an unbridled expression of sexual urges (Gen 38:9). Anbnakan k;rpow s;-a\in kirqe \ag;zn;lou moloujiun!
IDOL: Physical or material image or form representing a reality or being considered divine and thus an object of worship. Old Testemant: The first rebellion of the Hebrews centered around the golden calf made under Aaron's leadership in the wilderness (Ex. 32).
WITCHCRAFT: Magic, sorcery, etc.
HATRED:
VARIANCE: Strife
EMULATIONS: Jealousy is used in three senses in Scripture; (1) as intolerance of rivalry or unfaithfulness; (2) as a disposition suspicious of rivalry or unfaithfulness; and (3) as hostility towards a rival or one believed to enjoy an advantage. Sense 3 approximates envy. God is jealous for His people Israel in sense 1, that is, God is intolerant of rival gods. In the New Testament Paul speaks of his divine jealousy for the Christians at Corinth (2 Cor. 11:2). James regarded jealousy (or bitter envy) as characteristic of earthy, demonic wisdom (3:14) and as the source of all disorder and wickedness (3:16). Na.an]% mrzakzoujiun!
WRATH: We are instructed by Paul not to take revenge (Rom. 12:19), nor to "let the sun go down on your anger" (Eph. 4:26 NRSV). Fathers should not provoke children to wrath (Eph. 6:4). We must rid ourselves of "all such things--anger, wrath, malice" (Col. 3:8 NRSV). To realize this freedom from the domination of wrath, the gracious work of the Holy Spirit is needed to sanctify and cleanse the heart of the attitudes and feelings of wrath and anger. Romans 8 pictures the mind filled by the Spirit which is "life and peace" (Rom. 8:6 NRSV). There is no need to continue in the fleshly spirit of wrath for the Holy Spirit provides inner peace (Phil. 4:4-8).
STRIFE
SEDITION: Rebellion against lawful authority. Jewish leaders tried to convince Felix, the governor, that Paul had incited sedition (Acts 24:5). KJV used "seditions" in Galatians 5:20 for one of the works of the flesh, but modern translations are more accurate in using "dissensions." Relationships among believers rather than to governments is the apparent meaning.
HERESY: An opinion or doctrine not in line with the accepted teaching of a church; the opposite of orthodoxy. Paul used the term to refer to groups which threatened the harmonious relations of the church. In 1 Corinthians 11:19, where he was writing about the disgraceful way in which the Corinthians were observing the Lord's Supper, the word has to do with the outward manifestations of the factions he mentioned in verse 18. In Galatians 5:20, it is one of the works of the flesh and is in a grouping including strife, seditions, and envyings. It apparently has to do with people who choose to place their own desires above the fellowship of the church.
ENVY: A painful or resentful awareness of another's advantage joined with the desire to possess the same advantage. The advantage may concern material goods (Gen. 26:14) or social status (30:1). Paul was, however, able to rejoice that the gospel was preached even if the motive were envy (Phil. 1:15).
MURDER: Jesus removed the concept of murder from a physical act to the intention of one's heart (Matt. 5:21-22). According to Jesus, murder really begins when one loses respect for another human being. Spitting in the face of another, looking with contempt upon another, or unleashing one's anger are signs that a murderous spirit is present.
DRUNKENNESS: Paul repeatedly warned against the dangers of drunkenness (Rom. 13:13; 1 Cor. 5:11; Gal. 5:21; 1 Thess. 5:7). Timothy 3:3 and Titus 1:7 warn church leaders they must not be drunkards. Drunkenness is a pagan custom, not a Christian one (1 Pet. 4:3). Drunkards are among these who will not "inherit the kingdom of God" (1 Cor. 6:10).
