Houston's History
Brothers John K. and Augustus C. ALLEN founded Houston in 1836. These two New York real estate men came down and purchased a town site just off of Buffalo Bayou. They named this new town Houston, for General Sam Houston, the hero of Texas independence.
In 1837, Houston was incorporated, and made the first capitol of the Republic of Texas. It served until 1839. It was again instated as capitol in 1842, and remained so until 1845.
Mayor John Andres led the city administration in establishing the Port of Houston in 1841. The port had become important enough by 1853 to have 4 thousand dollars appropriated for the improvement of the channel. Also in 1853 the first railway was established in Houston.
In 1846, Texas was offically named as the 28th state of the United States.
The discovery of oil in outlying towns around Houston at the turn of the century sped up Houston's growth. Then, in 1914 the Houston Ship Channel was expanded enough to house oceangoing vessels. This marked the beginning of a very active and prosperous time.
During WWII Houston was a main center for war industries. Large quantities of the nations sulfur, petroleum products, synthetic rubber, came from Houston.
The Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center (first named Manned Spacecraft Center) was established in Houston, and the Astrodome was first opened to the public in 1965. City and Suburban office space expanded due to vast building programs, and huge redevelopment of downtown Houston was undertaken in 1970. Also during the 1970's the land area of Houston was greatly expanded and finally established itself as the commercial and population center of the Southwest.
