HORRORFIND 2003
THREE TIMES THE FUN AT HORRORFIND 3

Hey all -

Breaking the prime directive (as dictated by Jeff McClellon, American, after the first Horrorfind in 2001: "What Happens At Horrorfind, Stays At Horrorfind"), I am now going talk about Horrorfind 2003.

* Friday; John (aka: TV's Dr. Edgar Sarcofiguy) and I leave DC at 5pm and arrive at the convention at 7pm. Long drive, but considering it was a Friday, and I was dealing with two rush hours, it wasn't as bad as it could have been.

* The new space for the convention is terrific. I do slightly miss the familiarity of the other place (detailed in last year's report, where I also talked about how small it was to accommodate a convention like this), but soon warm right up to the new digs. Two floors with lots of room to walk around. Plenty of new dealers. Still not as big as Chiller (few ever will be - which is a good thing!), but some good stuff to be had.

* Our table is, again, in the middle of the space. This year, though, the space (which was two feet shorter than last year) is free because Ghastlee is working his boney ass off on the official convention video with Jeff.

* The table was a very, very different experience this year; there were very few times that we were all at the table at the same time (maybe once?). Bob, Suspira and Jeff had to film; John and I got there late Friday and left early to see the Freddy/Jason  movie, and we also had to film stuff for our show. Dr. Freak, Tim and I rotated, with Freak taking on most of the time there. As a result, of the individual stuff, Freak sold more. Tim did sell a mask to a little kid. Bob sold an episode of his show (actually, Freak sold it for him!), as well as 3 copies of the Equinox special Ghastlee produced last spring  (one to me). I sold Suspira's "Freddy" mask. Ghastlee's CD didn't sell, but neither did the SPOOKY MOVIE tape, which did have a nice cover this year! DRAT

* People do want DVDs! We sold 2 Mortician DVDs there; Freak and I got really good at promoting it - an excellent example of the HHU in action!!

* We also sold, for the HHU website, the HHU DVD as well as CDs donated by The Patient Creatures - we did all right for ourselves this year! Dr. Freak authored the DVD for us; it is amazing; I think he did something to make it look better, even! People we talked with about the HHU loved it; one guy from Seattle was thrilled to find us.

* By the time Cinema Wasteland comes and goes we should have made enough money to keep the website hosted on this current server for two more years (unless we have to upgrade, or they raise the rates). A really nice bake-sale, I must say, and it could not have been done without Ghastlee selling his soul to be the videographer for the weekend, or Freak and Tim pitching in and working the booth.

* You can see the Horrorfind website to see the guest list they had. I talked with some of them, and taped only a couple of bits here and there. Alice Cooper always had a huge, huge line. John and I got an interview with Reggie Banister which is hysterical - we decided only to do one interview with a celeb, and John wanted it to be him (Nightshadow, please tell him "THANKS!" from us again!!)

* Count Gore was busier than ever, helped by good friends Judy Comeau and Leanna Chamish (it wouldn't be Horrorfind without the three of them). Actually, all of us where very busy - too busy, in fact. Very little time to rest and chill and even meet the other denizens of the dealer room. Our neighbors from last year were across the dealer room; they came by with bagels this year for Sunday breakfast - very cool people.

* I got so busy I almost forgot to go spend money! My friend Crystal will know how important this is to me at these conventions. I did wind up getting a couple of things, but really not too much. I think I dropped more at a single spot at our table! The only really geeky thing I came home with was a Joey Ramone action figure. I couldn't resist that one.

* The costume contest, under Gore's direction, went much better this year than in previous years. Very smooth and very funny. The judges were excellent - they were real troopers - and there was one moment of shock when a man in a stilts costume tumbled as he was going up on the stage. Looked worse than it was (I hope), everyone was just stunned when it happened. The winning costume was fantastic - this "Space Ape" that moved on four legs (see pic). MAN! How cool it would have been to have that in someone's show or movie?!

* Made a lot of contacts, and will be doing a lot of follow up, both for myself, the HHU and THE SPOOKY MOVIE. This is one big yardstick I use to judge a convention's success. I. Zombi slipped me a couple of movies that we might be able to host; another guy gave me a DVD he was selling - a compilation of short films hosted by a horror host created just for this DVD series they are doing! He'll be added soon to the website!

* Saw a lot of old friends, and made some new ones, which is another reason I love Horrorfind. The Patient Creatures (Carpathian, Grim, Kuzibah and Miss Scarlett) had the best spot in the entire convention, and it was too tempting to slip into their corner and yap forever. From Count Gore's internet list I saw Mark Martin (but only once! I was very disappointed we didn't seem more of him), author Lee Cushing, Amy, her lovely mother and I finally got to meet Nicole. Also, author Robert Walker (someone I had just met) camped out with us for awhile on Sunday, and he chatted up his 20+ year adventure in writing.

*  With the exception of some friends who were never given the room number and never made it, or lil Dr. Freak who was kept past his bedtime, the Ghastle Room Saturday Night Party did not disappoint. I'll leave it at that.

* Sunday was a blur - very fast, and very furious. John had to leave early, and Bob/Ghastlee had tons of filming to do with the guests, and we just didn't have the energy to sell anymore. Well, except for Freak, who managed to sell out of most of his DVDs.

* Tim became "Joe Nosferatu," and the convention ended with a few scenes filmed for the new movie, including a couple involving his vampire relatives, who were doing an intervention - how he's giving vampire's a bad name! (I really hope that last bit winds up as a dream sequence! HA!)

* I stayed to see the Dayton Host Underground off; Bob, Kathy, Jeff, Tim and Henrique (Freak) all crammed into the same car without AC, and with MORE stuff than with they came with! (Feeling partially responsible, for having sold Kathy some big, bulky stuff, I offered to hold one of the bigger pieces until Wasteland). 9 hour drive for them! YIKES!

THAT'S IT!

It was a great time; we did have a lot of people ask about Halloween Jack and Dr. Creep, and they sent their best wishes. MANY folks are also excited about Wasteland, when more and more hosts will equal more and more fun!

Can't wait to see everyone in less than 2 months!
