I, MADMAN Hellooooooo, This is Doctor Sarcofiguy givin' ya another review. This one, however, is from my very own archives. Yes it is! If you can find this movie, then you would be truly blessed! The movie is I Madman starring the eighties beauty, who has somehow disappeared from the cinema screen, Jenny Wright, of Near Dark fame (recently re released on video and dvd!). |

I Madman is about a
lovely young lady, an aspiring actress really, who reads from a novel by a
mysterious author named Malcolm Brand. A scientist, and of course . . . a
madman! The book entitled "Much of Madness, More of Sin,"
catalogues Brand's 'confession' of a son he created through the melding of
his own seed, with that of . . . a jackal. The ghastly creature created from
this profane union, is a far more plausible, and horrific, result from an
animal/human fusion than Damien Thorne ever was during The Omen, I tellya!
The jackal child exacts his revenge on his father for opening him up to such an oppressive, evil existence, and kills him in the end. But, that's not the end of the story! Hah! Our heroine is to discover that this was but a sequel to another "true life" account of Malcolm Brand. Enthralled by the notion of another book, our heroine sets out to find the book entitled I Madman! Fortunately for her, she just happens to work at the very bookstore that is handling the various and sundry written properties from the Malcolm Brand estate. I mean, fancy that! Fancy it, I say! She reads the book, and all sorts of mayhem ensues. The spirit of Malcolm Brand is conjured forth from the book, and he systematically kills certain key individuals in our heroines life, just as he did to those he mutilated, and murdered, years ago in his book of 'confessions'. I Madman, to my mind, is a wonderfully acted piece, with genuinely interesting characters, and situations. And though it's clearly made in the eighties, with its moments of syrupy, bloody gore, dramatic off screen/'line-of-sight' killings, and sickening make-up effects, it effectively invokes a style, and feel, of horror films from the 1930's and 40's. Even during some of it's more 'contemporary' moments. There is a lot of dark humor, and appropriate tension to be had. And the antagonist Malcolm Brand. AH–he's so wonderfully villainous! If this film had gotten a better release, I feel he could have grown into a modern day, visceral myth, like say, Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorheeves, Michael Myers, or Pinhead. *Malcolm Brand. Malcolm Brand. Doesn't that sound like a true pain in the butt, horror type psycho?! Does to me! I Madman is one of my favorites. I give it 4 out of 4 Czars! *(With apologies to "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman") -Doc Sarcofiguy! |
