PILOT:
Broken Bow*
We
meet, over various sequences, the crew of the Enterprise,
including Captain Jonathan Archer, Ensign
Mayweather at the helm, Subcommander T'Pol (a
Vulcan), Dr. Phlox (an alien species), Lt. Charles
"Trip" Tucker (Chief Engineer) and
others. Various reviews and summaries can be
found at www.reviewboy.com,
but now on to Hoshi!
We
learn Ensign Hoshi Sato is a
linguistics expert teaching at a Terran
University. She is Japanese-American.
Hoshi has taught herself how to imitate various
heretofore inimitable alien speech and vocal
patterns and is a brilliant expert on
exolinguistics, by which she is both driven and
fascinated.
She is recruited as a communications officer
(Chief of Communications?) aboard
the NX-01 Enterprise by Captain Jonathan
Archer, who literally has to browbeat her into
going on their mission three weeks earlier than
she'd thought.
She learns Klingon
(which has over 80 dialects) within a week,
albeit imperfectly, in order to communicate both
with Klaang, the Klingon they are returning, and
the people on his homeworld. We learn that she is as
fluent as a native speaker in Vulcan. We
also learn that she has an uncanny "ear"
and can hear differentiations in the warp drive as
well as sense warp signatures in the proximity of
the ship in a vague way while sitting at her post
in the bridge. Ensign Sato is one of the first
humans, along with Lt. Trinneer and Capt. Archer,
to meet Klingons on their home turf, the planet
Kronos.
103:
Fight or Flight*
The
episode starts with Hoshi contemplating a slug
being kept in sickbay, the only alien life form
the crew of the Enterprise has found in the
entire two weeks of their mission thus far.
The crew is feeling very antsy, experiencing cabin
fever, etc. Finally, they find a ship, seemingly
abandoned and recently attacked. The hails
of the Enterprise are not being
answered. Captain Archer tells Hoshi she is
to be part of the away team to go investigate the
alien vessel. Hoshi then reveals the
environmental suits trigger her claustrophobia,
and that in the Zero-G tests at the Academy, she
merely "bit [her] lip and got through
it," but never overcame her fear.
Archer tells her to do so a second time.
(She also reveals that the Universal Translator
has triple the lag routed through the comm
system.)
The
away team gears up. When asked about weapons
clearance, Hoshi states she is cleared for EM
(electromagnetic?) side arms and Class 3
rifles. Unfortunately, the alien vessel is
full of corpses hanging from hooks. Hoshi
screams "like a 12 year old".
Hoshi displays a great deal of wry sarcasm back on
the ship and is also very shaken. She tells
Dr. Phlox she graduated second in her class and
studied exolinguistics for three years. Dr.
Phlox suggests she may be happier teaching.
However, when the ship is in peril, Hoshi
(tearfully) comes through under pressure and
convinces a second ship of the victimized alien
race to help fend off the aliens who killed the
found crew in the first place. They make
friendly first contact, all thanks to Hoshi's
expertise. Finally, she gets to return the
slug to a friendly biosphere. Adapting, she
tells it, will be easy.
