After receiving the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award® in
1993, ANNA PAQUIN became one of the most sought-after actresses
of her generation, playing diverse roles in a wide variety of
films pairing her with some of the film industry's best talents.
An Oscar® winner at the age of eleven for her performance in
"The Piano," Paquin was the first New Zealander to receive the
Best Supporting Actress honor and one of the youngest Oscar®
winners ever. Born July 24, 1982 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada,
Anna Helene Paquin was raised in Lower Hutt, New Zealand. After
making her stage bow at the age of seven as a skunk in a school
production, she decided to audition for the part of Holly
Hunter's precocious daughter in Jane Campion's "The Piano." One of
5000 applicants, Paquin--whose previous work was limited to TV
commercials--won the role, and with both the success of the 1993
film and her Oscar® win, entered the realm of international fame.
Paquin followed her triumph with several notable films, including
the title character in "Jane Eyre," "Fly Away Home," playing
Queen Isabella in Steven Spielberg's "Amistad" co-starring an
ensemble that includes Anthony Hopkins and Morgan Freeman,
"Hurlyburly," Miramax Films' "A Walk on the Moon" with Viggo
Mortensen,
"She's All That"
opposite Freddie Prinze, Jr. and "All the Rage," "Sleepless Beauty"
and Bryan Singer's "X-Men,"
based on the best-selling Marvel Comic franchise, in which she
played Rogue. Her recent roles were small but memorable. In
Cameron Crowe's highly acclaimed "Almost Famous," about a '70's
rock band, she played a groupie named Polexia Aphrodesia, and in
"Finding Forrester," she played a rebellious rich girl opposite Sean
Connery.
Her next projects are film "Buffalo Soldiers, the thriller
"Darkness," the crime drama "25th Hour" and "X-2," the sequel to
the successful "X-Men."
On television, Paquin starred opposite Alfre Woodard in "Frankie
Adams," an adaptation of Carson McCullers' "The Member of the
Wedding."
Paquin took a break from Columbia University to appear in the
stage play "This Is Our Youth," costarring Hayden Christensen.
