DOMINIQUE SWAIN rose to relative notoriety in 1997 after being
cast as pre-teen temptress Dolores Haze in Adrian Lyne's 90's
remake of Stanley Kubrick's 1962 film "Lolita." Swain obtained
the controversial part after a minor role in Joseph Ruben's "The
Good Son" and an unsuccessful casting for "An Interview with the
Vampire." Swain was picked from a reported 2500 girls. Since the
success of "Lolita" and her brilliant portrayal of Dolores Haze,
Swain has been busy working on various projects and honing her
acting skills by acting in a variety of screen genres.
Born in the back of her father's Datsun somewhere on the Santa
Monica Freeway on August 12, 1980, Swain grew up with three
sisters (one of whom, Chelsea, is also an actress) in Malibu.
Her interest in acting led to a role as a stunt double in "The
Good Son" and an audition for the lead in "Lolita."
Soon after completing "Lolita," Swain was cast in her second major
motion picture, John Woo's action/thriller "Face/Off." She starred
as the rebellious daughter of John Travolta and Joan Allen. Her
next role was not in a movie, but a starring role in a music video.
She can be seen in Shawn Mullins' 1998 video "Lullaby." In 1999,
Swain played the lead character in the coming-of-age movie "Girl"
with Sean Patrick Flanery. She played the part of Andrea Marr, a
straight-A teen who explores the Portland rock scene.
The year 2000 was a busy one for Swain, with five new films due
for release and three films in production. The first film,
"Intern," which was set in New York, follows her character, Jocelyn
Bennett, a young, under-appreciated intern at the hip magazine, who
tries to deal with love, life, fashion, and the nuances of the
human condition. In "The Smokers," Swain had the role of 17-year-old
Jefferson Roth. She and two other rebellious teen-age girls at
boarding school attempt to turn the tables and even the score in the
battle of the sexes, all the while exploring the insecurities and
frustrations of high school life and the psyche of America's youth.
The three other films include "Mary Jane's Last Dance," a murder
mystery in which Swain plays a promiscuous college student who uses
her sexual charms to hide a murder, "Tart," and "Happy Campers," a
comedy, in which college freshmen counselors take charge and spice
up the everyday routine of the camp.
Swain's other new feature projects include "Mean People Suck," a
comedy about three teenagers who place a bet to see which one is
the meanest; "Briar Patch," starring Arie Verveen Swain opposite
Henry Thomas as a petty thief who imprisons his unhappy wife; she
in turn schemes to murder him; and "Dead in the Water," a thriller
about three Americans on a boat trip off the coast of Rio and most
recently, "New Best Friend." Along with actor Sean Bean, N*Sync
singer JC Chasez and other celebrities, Swain appeared in Moby's
music video of his song "We Are All Made of Stars."
The daughter of David Sr. and Cindy, Swain was born on August 12th,
1980 on a Santa Monica freeway, in her father's Datsun. She is
sibling to sisters Chelsea, Jennifer, and Alexis, and brother David
Jr. Swain graduated from Malibu High School, where she was an 'A'
student. She started university in the fall of 2001. Swain
currently resides in Santa Monica, and lives with older sister
Alexis. Besides her pursuits as an actor, her interests include
art, sculpture, and creative writing. Her sporting pursuits are
many, and include snowboarding, soccer, softball, swimming, track
and field, and an eight-year stint in the state junior lifeguard
program when she was younger.
