The following pics were taken in and around Galena, Illinois. Galena is a beautiful, historic town about a half hour drive east of Dubuque, Iowa. We stayed at the Chestnut Mountain Resort which has a lovely scenic view of the Mississippi River. They have what's called an Alpine Slide for summertime enjoyment. It's kind of like a sled ride down a flume. To get back up, we had to take a chair lift. We enjoyed many other activities, such as mini-golf, horseback riding, and an indoor pool. |
Getting to our room was quite nice after the drive from Chicago. | ![]() |

We had a room with a view! I didn't realize until later that the screen would show up in the picture. It was still a very pretty sight! You can just see the Mississippi River. |
The town of Galena was built amid the many hills left by glaciers. The downtown area, Main Street, is filled with many wonderful sights and unique shops, as well as several excellent restaurants, a hotel, and Bed & Breakfast Homes. | ![]() |

This picture shows the "High School Steps" leading up the two blocks to the old high school. There are 194 steps, or so they say. (The boys have made the round trip on previous trips to Galena. We were all too tired by the time I snapped this.) |

Stillman Manor is a beautiful Bed & Breakfast. We stayed there about 20 years ago - loved it! ![]() |
