installation?

I remember I heard a story from my favourite trainer (the same master who made my grass green). He just finished a demonstration where he'd installed a new set of attitudes and beliefs about what was passive and what was active in a person, and what was conscious and what was unconscious. As he talked, the subject's hands and arms moved in lithe twisting motion, as if emulating the subtle synthesis going on beneath the surface. The whole induction seemed to have the effect that unconscious competence become glowingly conscious and conscious competence become smoothly unconscious.

It was a neat trick, no doubts about it. But he wanted to demonstrate another side of it, and he asked for another volunteer for the next part. Surprisingly (or not, if you don't think about it), nobody raised their hand. He promised he'd go through with the volunteer after the demonstration. No responses. Increasing his offer, he said he'd give the volunteer a free training, "After all", he said, "It steamrollers when it comes to steamroller time". Finally one hand was raised and a slightly diminuitive young woman walked out of the audience.

"Are you sure you want to continue with this?", he asked. Looking at him curously, she replied "Well, I'll give it a go, but I'm not sure if I can get your arms to twist quite so much."

Some say installation isn't a useful metaphor. I guess it really depends what you've got in store (something else?) for everyone else.
