AUDIENCE (AND AUTHOR) RESPONSES
A milestone! The first direct response from authors, specifically from first author Dr. Daniel Kripke, who pointd out some typos (that I've hopefully found and corrected) including one missing decimal point on their population estimate for the prevalence of sleep disordered breathing which could result in a very misleading impression (also corrected).
Dr. Kripke made the important point that thee "were very careful NOT to say that we were measuring the prevalence of a 'diagnosis of sleep apnea,' and therefore, one should not represent that we claimed to be. Rather, our article was critical of current diagnostic criteria.
Dr. Kripke was quite correct, both in pointing out the typographical errors and the more major error that I had made of equating their patients with sleep disordered breathing with sleep apneics. This does change the meaning of their findings and I apologize for a misleading confusion of terms, which I have attempted to correct in my Comments.
