If you choose

Norplant® ...

Norplant ... your clinician will put six small capsules under the skin of your upper arm. Capsules constantly release small amounts of hormone that prevent release of the egg; thicken cervical mucus to keep sperm from joining the egg. Removal can be done at any time and must be done by a clinician.





Effectiveness

  • 99.96%
  • not effective against STIs

Advantages

  • protects against pregnancy for five years
  • no daily pill
  • nothing to put in place before intercourse
  • can use while breastfeeding (six weeks after delivery)
  • can be used by some women who cannot take the Pill

Possible Problems

  • side effects include irregular bleeding and other discomforts, including: headaches, nausea, depression, nervousness, dizziness, and weight gain
  • medical procedure needed for insertion and removal
  • possible scarring at insertion site
  • rarely, infection at insertion site

Cost
Insertion: $500-$600 for exam and implants. Removal: $100-$200. Check with your local family planning clinic for information.
