New Brunswick Again

Aug 17-21, 2003

The east coast of New Brunswick is dramatically different than the Fundy area. Here the land is flat and covered by a vast moss-filled Acadian forest surrounded by salt marshes and sandy peninsulas. Our trip ended with a leisurely camping experience at Kouchibouguac National Park.

New Brunswick

Aug 17 11:52 am
Since the day was overcast, we decided to avoid the highway and meander north along the scenic coast.

Kouchibouguac

Aug 17 2:48 pm
Kouchibouguac park boasts "the warmest salt water beaches north of Virginia". This is due to the shallow lagoons and the barrier islands that protect the coastline from the colder Atlantic currents.

Magnetic Hill

Aug 19 11:49 am
We recuperated at camp for a day and then headed out to explore the famous Magnetic Hill near Moncton. Here you drove your car down a hill and then coasted back up in reverse!

Karla on Safari

Aug 19 12:28 pm
After going up and down magnetic hill several times, we went on Safari at the adjoining zoo.

No ... Zebra's are not native to Eastern Canada.

Fly away!

.. and then sending them off to their pre-programmed destinations.

Mini Golf

Aug 19 5:09 pm
The park also had mini-golf facilities...

Air Hockey

Aug 19 5:50 pm
.. and an arcade. The kids enjoyed a temporary lapse to civilization before we went back to our wilderness environment.

Hermit Crabs

Aug 20 1:37 pm
On our last vacation day we devoted our time to exploring the beach. As we waded through the water, the rocks seemed to squirm beneath our feet. We soon discovered that these were no rocks, but numerous shelled creatures that inhabited the sandy floor. The kids were soon busy capturing these inhabitants, starting with this pair of Hermit Crabs.

Rock Crab

Aug 20 1:39 pm
Large rock crabs were a little more challenging to catch. Soon we added this monster to our collection. These creatures were fiesty and a little intimidating at first...

Scary

Aug 20 1:45 pm
.. the hermit crabs aggressively engaged in battle, and had to be separated. It was extremely entertaining to watch these creatures parry and scuttle about ...

Braver

Aug 20 1:50 pm
... despite how ferocious they seemed, Josiah soon built up enough courage to successfully pick up this crab without getting pinched.

Aqua Farm

Aug 20 2:27 pm
The collection progresses to starfish and more crabs. Soon we need to build a pool to house our aqua zoo.

Crowd Gathers

Aug 20 2:38 pm
The exhibit started to attract crowds and other adventure seekers to join in on the fun.

Moon Snail

Aug 20 4:18 pm
Karla finds a large Moon Snail to add to the collection. As the day begins to slip away, we return our captives to their ocean home.

Embarrased

Aug 20 9:02 pm
That evening Josiah and I are dragged into an improptu skit at the camp outdoor theater and effectively embarrased by the pitiless host.

Statues

Aug 21 10:16 am
On our way out of the park, we stop to pose with historic figures that represent the rich heritage of this area.
