Heading Back Home
Aug 21-22, 2003
All good things must come to an end. We departed for home bursting with the sites, sounds and experiences that we shared during our East Coast Trip. I believe that the close quarters and shared discovery on our journey helped resulted in us drawing closer as a family. At the end of it all, there is no place like home!

Finally our vacation time is spent. Refreshed, we begin the journey back home.

On the way, we take a necessary tour to Howard, New Brunswick. Alas, it's not even large enough to boast an official town sign, and this landmark is the only demonstrable proof of it's existence.

Drivers are cautioned to be alert for wandering moose. During our trip there were a number of reports of people killed or seriously injured in a collision with these large mammals.

We cross the familiar New Brunswick/Quebec border and turn our clocks back to Eastern Standard Time.

At Quebec City, we decide to take the bridge over the river and travel along the north shore.

We are temporarily disoriented in Montreal and by the time we wind our way towards Ontario, darkness is rapidly falling. We grab a quick bite to eat and then desperately look for a place to crash. At this point we have been on the road for about 14 hours. Finally, we pray for a break, and on a chance take a side road and awaken the owner of this campsite, who waves us in.

Although the campsite owner cannot speak a word of english, he readily accepts our MasterCard. We leave the trailer hooked up for our shortest stay at a campsite (under 8 hours) and a quick getaway in the morning. With profuse thanks, we part ways and resume our trek home.

The Ontario sign warmly welcomes us after nearly three weeks abroad. Although we are still several hours from home, the familiar territory is strangely comforting.

Finally, we roll into our driveway after 6742 kilometers, and many wonderful memories. We come back with treasures in our pockets, but more importantly impressions in our minds and hearts, and a deep sense of gratitude for this great country we call home.
