Dressing rooms & more | Parchment | Professors' first names
[This is an excerpt from Newsweek.]
"A quick peek at the stars' rather run-down
dressing rooms seems to
indicate that they've indeed remained normal in the face of global fame. Watson,
12, has packed hers with typical pre-teen girl detritus: Brad Pitt calendar
above her desk; spangled purple belt on the floor; hairbrushes; Hello Kitty
stickers; and adoring fan mail. Grint's is the 14-year-old XY equivalent,
complete with a mini-billiard table, a guide to the 2002 World Cup, unfinished
food, and a charming poster that deals with the considerable comedic potential
of flatulence. As for the leader of the trio? [Daniel] Radcliffe's room is
surprisingly neat given his taste for punk rock and Spider-Man, and his
reputation as a practical joker.
'A lot of fooling around happens behind takes,'
says Watson. 'We had a
week with 300 extras in the Great Hall, its boiling hot, the food stinks,
everyone is dying of boredom, and we have to make everybody laugh. It
got so bad that Dan had to get up on the table with Robbie Coltrane [who plays
groundskeeper Hagrid] and dance. He did the cancan. He did the Macarena. The
whole hall was laughing. Ask him about it! He'll blush.' Tom Felton, 15, who
plays Draco Malfoy [comments] 'My friend bought the Draco doll and we
were playing with it by the riverside, torturing it, breaking its arms and
dangling it over the bridge. We killed it in the end. That was odd, playing
with a toy that looks kinda like you.'"
A few other things that I might add is that no replacement has been named as
Dumbledore after Richard Harris' death (Daniel, Emma and Rupert were shocked
when they heard the news) and the third Harry Potter movie is rumored to be a
PG13.

In Harry Potter, J.K Rowling
uses several times the phrase "rolls of parchment". Parchment (by medieval
standards) is very hard, and the ink is not absorbed as well as vellum.
Therefore, a lot of ink crumbles off the parchment as soon as it is rolled into
a little scroll. Furthermore, when an owl carries a roll of parchment mail, the
paper is battered by wind and humidity. Naturally, by the time the letter
reaches its destination, much of the ink will have flaked off. Of course,
Hogwarts parchment may be charmed, or may actually be vellum, but that isn't
mentioned. Lol.
Parchment is made from the thinning and doing stuff to animal skins such as
goat. In medieval times, the papermaker guild building is ridden with blood,
animal bits, and maggots. It would be very interesting if Hogwarts has these
rooms ;) but of course, a more non-Muggle way of acquiring parchment or vellum
would be conjuring it, or transfiguring an existing item ^_^

Name | Tidbits |
Filius Flitwick | Filius is Latin for son. Hmm, does Flitwick have family? |
Xiomara Hooch | No xio exists, but mara is Latin for marl [an earth rich in CaC, added to lime-deficient soils]. Also, similar words relate to the sea, (but I doubt any of this has significance). |
Slatero Quirrell | Tero is Latin for to rub, wear out. |
Minerva McGonagall | As all of you (especially those past 6th grade) should know, Minerva was the Roman form of the goddess Athena. |
Albus Dumbledore | Albus is Latin for white; Dumbledore Old English for bumblebee. |
Severus Snape | Severus is Latin for stern, harsh and Snape is a small town JKR once visited! (Aren't the occupants of the town thrilled!) |
