Airfield & Railway Battery 8



Site of the Cape Charles Air Force Base airfield.
Prior to this it was the site of 8-inch railway guns (1942 - 1944).
The hill in front of the radio tower is the plotting room bunker for
the nearby Battery Winslow (off to the right).


Plotting Room Bunker

Built in 1943 of reinforced concrete covered by earth - also used as the USAF NCO club.


The Plotting & Switchboard Room Bunker contains the switchboard
room, the plotting and spotting room, and the radio room.
The entrances have been buried.


Observation Tower

Built of reinforced concrete in 1942 and located by the airfield.


The Group Station, also known as the Kiptopeake Tower.
This served different gun group commanders.
