Strang To Return to HSHL Action - Temporarily

Calgary, AB (SP) - On February 19, 2003, Steven Strang returns to the HSHL.  On a holiday from Calgary, Steve will join the HSHL in action for 10 days.  It has not been said how many games Steve will participate in - or even if he will be considered part of the league - but one thing is for sure, he will be ready to play.  Steve had this to say when asked if he was looking forward to playing in the HSHL again: "It wasn't a tough decision for me to make - I love hockey and the only league that ever meant anything to me was the HSHL".  When asked what position he'll be playing he said "I don't know, I haven't been playing much up here (Calgary) so I may get between the pipes for most games - I miss it".

Look for Steve to either renew his rivalry with Bryan Green or try to live up to the talk Bryan and Steve trashed talked at the May 24 party in North Harbour - stay tuned to find out if this trash talk becomes a reality.

St. John's, NF (SP) - The HSHL season kicked off on September 14, 2002.

Rookie Ken Vokey may not have won in either of his first games, but he did score 2 goals in those 2 games.  Former HSHLer Steven Strang had this to say about the arrival of the newcomer Vokey to the league: "2 goals in 2 games is impressive for the rook, I'm sure the 2 losses must have hurt, but to know that he handed Bryan Green a loss so earlier has to feel good, even though he lost.  I haven't got to see him play, but he can't be any worse than last year's rookie of the year Jack Stoyles or Jim Stoyles - I can't remember his name."

No matter what the opinions of anyone in this league is, Ken Vokey is here, and the wins are only going to come with time - and when he fully understands to hand Bryan a loss whenever he has the chance, only then will he bring balance to the force.

Green Hits 100 Goal Mark, sets the mark to follow

St. John's, NF (AP) - On January 21, 2002, Bryan Green became the first player in HSHL history to score 100 goals in a season.  This accomplishment is not an easy task.  In just 43 games, Bryan has reached this mark.  The closest competitor to him has 57.  So one would start to think that maybe Mr. Green is a bit of a ball hog in the league.  This reporter knows for a fact that this is far from the truth.  An excellent playmaker and a staple on any defence he plays for, the only weakness this reporter sees is when the phenom steps between the pipes - which leads us to a totally different story.

Fellow HSHL league member Steven Strang has this to say about the 100 goal plateau being reached by Bryan: "It's great to see a record being set like this - I don't think anyone imagined 100 goals being scored this early, in 43 games, Bryan is averaging over 2 goals a game, that's not an easy thing to do - unless you have the talent like he does."  When asked if he thought he would reach 100 this year, Strang replied "Not too likely, I shoot a lot, don't get me wrong, but with just a little less accuracy than Bryan.  My moves aren't the best in the world - just ask Bryan!".

So to Bryan Green, congratulations.  This record will be very tough to beat.

Harris Injured Again

St. John's (SP) - It seems that rookie Luke Harris can't avoid the injury bug as he sustained further injury to his knee and is suspected that also he is having problems with his knee.  Harris was impressive in his all-star game apperance until he left momentarily to see what the problem was.  The good news is that it came during the All-Star Break and he has yet to miss any games.  The break is now in its 17th day.

Harris Out 4-6 Weeks

St. John's, NF (AP) - New comer Luke Harris will be sidelined 4-6 weeks after a previous injury returned last week during Tuesday's (January 29) games.

Doctors say fluid was building up in the knee and it had to be drained.  Harris has been a spark since his joining the league, his 9 goals in 6 games is a good start.

Harris was unavailable for comment.

St. John's (SP) - As the All-Star break for the HSHL/NPHA has reached its 17th day, the longest break of the season outside the Christmas break, it appears that the league will not even come close to doubling the number of games before the break.  What with university and college life occupying most of the league's time in the nights and all.  Steven Strang, one of the founders of the league had this comment "Well, you can't do much about assignments, projects, essays, and tests getting in the way of playing in the nights.  Sometimes we are only 1 or 2 players short of continuing after the break, but it never happens.  It seems as if some of the players appear to have had enough of hockey for this year.  It disappoints me as this is my last year playing regularly for the HSHL/NPHA".  Justin Stoyles, a rookie in the league had this to say "It sucks".  Cory Pike, also a founding member of the league says "It just ain't right".

Strang Rumored To Be Retiring At End of Season

St. John's, NF (AP) - Rumor has it that Steven Strang, member of the Health Science Hockey League since it's beginnings, is going to call it quits at the end of the 2001-2002 season.  The rumor comes as word of Strang moving to Calgary, Alberta to pursue a career in the computer arts has been all but confirmed.

Strang is 18-10 in the offensive role of the game (tallying 45 goals in those 28 games), has played 14 games between the pipes in the one net system, and one of the pioneers for the two-net system, has played in all 6 two-net games between the pipes, with a 3-3 record.  Strang seems to be leaving in the peak of his career.  For most of the season, Strang has been battling it out with long time rival, but good friend Bryan Green for top spot in the standings.  A recent 5-game losing skid has put him back a bit, but this reporter thinks that this is not the reason for retirement.

When we tried to reach Strang for comment on the rumors, he was not available.  Stay informed here @ the official HSHL website for more information on this story.
