The art of a good web site: It is a web site with good content which will attract people to stay and come back afterwards. In order to make your web site attractive to new comers and existing visitors, you must add new content on a regular basis. You can publish your web site using different media such as: text, graphics, photographs, animation, sound clips and video clips. You do not need to have all of them on your site. It all depends on the nature of your site. For a writers or news reporter, the web page can be all in text. For a photographer, it can be all in photographs. These 2 types of site normally can attract lots of visitors and produce excellent site traffic. News and good photos are in good demand on the web. What it really matter is how the content (text or photos) is presented on a web page which is a computer screen. We did not publish on a computer screen until the very last few years in the 20th century. Publishing on a computer screen is a very new concept to us. It is not as simple as writing or printing on a piece of paper. It involves knowledge from differnt areas such as: writing, type setting, computer color theory, computer skills, visual art, graphic, 3D graphics, music, audio, video, digital photography, animation, creativity... etc. Before we go any further, I would suggest you to start simple using a piece of paper. Write down what you have to present first. Start with key ideas, then add details to each key points. Classify your key points in groups. Consider who your target visitors are. How you can get their attention and responses. Make sure that your content is linked with logical flow that readers can catch your ideas easily and retain it in their mind. This is the first component of what we call a web site specification. You first create a draft version and modify it from time to time. This is an on going repeated process. Most web site fail to communicate effective mainly because the content is not attractive and effective enough to catch any attention or it is not properly presented. The common mistakes is to mix text with graphics that distract rather than enforcing the ideas being presented. For someone who is new to web site publishing, I would suggest to focus on the text part first and worry about the graphic part until you know what you are doing. If you create a web site in text only, you will be able to see your own picture(the idea you want to present) and the whole picture(how to present it as a web site). Later on, you can easily enhance it with a better site structure and meaningful graphic. Also it is a lot easier and simpler to start with in HTML. In short, get your content defined on a piece of paper. Type it to the word processor in electronic format. Create your site using only HTML with hyper links. Review it! Modify it until it looks perfect to you. Now you have a picture of your web site. You can start defining the web site structure and graphic needed. ... to be continue
Facts - sites attract traffic: 1) Some one had a site with only article about running a small business. It was presented 100% in text in the late 90's. There were over 50,000 words and was updated on a weekly basis. 2) There was another site created with only photos not too long ago. The only text you can see from that site is the photographer's name. 3) Site with only photos of Orchids. The text was used to identify only the Orchids names and the author's name. 4) I had a web page that generate close to 7000 visits. I only learned about that years later. It was a web page done by a Junior high school kid few years ago-year 2000. He tried to learn how to touch up an image and present it on the web. With his limited HTML skills at that time, he only put up about 10 images there. There was no background color, no text and nothing else what so ever. But it works. I scan the images in with a cheap scanner. Just to let you know, if you have good content, you do not need anything fancy at all. It is something simple and sweet that captures the visitors' spirit to come back again and again. This particular web page is visited on a daily basis with increased traffic. 5) The site that attracts good traffic today may not be as popular tomorrow. You must keep up with the current trends and the visitor's needs in order to stay popular. It is a lot of work to be a serious web master.
